Thanks to everyone who entered.
Let's get started with learning how to decode and score your starting pitchers.
As a reminder, each contestant must score their own franchise. Once you get the hang of deciphering your codes, this is very easy (and hopefully fun) game to play. However, no one will do it for you. Participation is required if you want a chance to win!
Deciphering Your Codes
1st Code
The 1st code you entered refers to a corresponding cell in a 10x10 grid.
In that grid are another 100 codes, each referring to a pitcher having one of the top 100 career strikeout totals in major league history.
Simply cross reference the 1st code you provided to get your player code (like you would in a game of Battleship).
Your player code is broken down as follows:
- The letter refers to all players whose last name ends with that letter
- The number refers to the position of your player among all players whose last name ends with this letter.
Example:
You chose F8 as your 1st code for starting pitcher #1. If you look at the starting pitcher grid, F8 refers to S4.
S4 means you are looking for the fourth pitcher on the list whose last name ends in an "S".
In the Top 100 list, the fourth pitcher whose name ends in an "S" is Robin Roberts.
2nd Code
The 2nd code refers to a corresponding cell in a 26x15 grid.
In that grid are another 390 codes, each referring to 1 of 15 different pitching categories and 1 of 26 seasons during that player's career you will use to score that player.
Simply cross reference the 2nd code you provided to get your stat/season code (like you would in a game of Battleship).
Your stat/season code is broken down as follows:
- The letter refers to the statistical category you will use to score that player's line. See the scoring chart.
- The number refers to the player's season you will use to score that player's line.
Example:
You have Robin Roberts.
You chose R12 as your 2nd code for him. If you look at the stat/season grid, R12 refers to L18.
L18 means you are looking for statistical category "L" during Roberts' 18th season.
NOTE: If your season number is greater than the length of that player's career, simply continue counting from Year 1 until you get to your number. In Roberts' case, suppose you had a season number of 22. In this case, you would count through his 19 year career once and then continue back at the top to his 3rd year to get to 22.
Scoring
Once you decode your player, category, and season, you're ready to score their line.
Simply look at the scoring chart and multiply their actual total for that category by the value assigned whether or not they are a Hall of Famer.
If you need to confirm if a player is a Hall of Famer, go here:
Hall of Famers | Baseball Hall of Fame
Let's take the Roberts example from the top.
You selected F8, R12
F8 = S4 = Robin Roberts
R12 = L18 = Walks Allowed in Year 18
Roberts is a Hall of Famer.
He had 30 walks allowed in Year 18.
The scoring chart shows -2.5 for each walk allowed by a Hall of Famer.
30 x -2.50 = -75
If Roberts wasn't a Hall of Famer, his score would've been 30 x -5 = -150.
Add up all 5 starting pitcher scores and post it in this thread.
Trade Deadline
After your outfielders have been decoded and scored, you will be involved in a trade with one of your fellow franchise owners. Up to 3 positions will be swapped straight up with that owner. Details to follow shortly.
Bonus Scoring
This will apply to your entire franchise and will be introduced at the very end of the contest.
I will keep this thread open for a day or so before moving on to the next part of your franchise.
A similar thread will be introduced for the remaining sections.
Contestants are encouraged to spot check each other's posted total.
If you have any questions, be sure to ask! Once you score a couple of lines, you'll see how easy this is to play.
Good luck!
