ooh a platoon in LF, I like it. Again with the Closer argument, there is a lot of talk about a "closer mentality", we can't doubt Aguilera (though if you want to argue Nathan that's fine) closing ability. I could go setup for Santana, but then I wonder if Nathan would be better in that role as well, we could also argue Reardon. With three legit closers in the bullpen, I don't know if I go Santana over any of them. What a good problem to have.
Hmm, Santana was awesome in the pen. If he is going to be in the pen,I'd have him close though. I think I'd stick with Oliva's bat in the OF. He did win a Gold GLove in 1966 when he had good knees and with Puckett and Winfield you have thirteen gold gloves between them so I wouldn't be concerned about outfield defense. With Winfield's arm, I think you want him in RF with Oliva in left. Torii is a great late-inning defensive replacement. Now that I think about it, what might be ideal is a platoon. Here are the splits: Oliva -vs- right handers (.319/.372/.518) Hunter -vs- left handers (.290/.353/.489)

I had a lot of fun with this, but it was awfully difficult. A lot of good players get left off.

Compose a 25 man roster for your favorite team. It has to be made up of players that actually played for that team.

Here is the one I did for the Reds. I must have changed it 10+ times and still keep thinking I need to make some changes. I thought about dropping a pitcher or two to add some more people to the bench.

C Johnny Bench
1B Ted Kluszewski
2B Joe Morgan
SS Barry Larkin
3B Pete Rose
RF Frank Robinson
CF Ken Griffey, Jr.
LF Adam Dunn

Bench
C Ernie Lombardi
OF Vada Pinson
IF Brandon Phillips
IF Dave Concepcion

SP Eppa Rixey
SP Tom Browning
SP Bucky Walters
SP Paul Derringer
SP Tony Mullane

RP Clay Carroll
RP John Franco
RP Joe Nuxhall
RP Rob Dibble
RP Pedro Borbon
RP Rawly Eastwick
RP Aroldis Chapman
RP Danny Graves

Great concept for a thread. I'd have to think about it for a while.

Looking at yours though made me think one thing. Is the Reds pitching that historically bad?

I didn't even read others posts that closely, but reading your comment to his made me think of something...

Reds have had unfortunate luck in drafting and raising pitching talent.

If you have some time you should check out Maloney. He was out of baseball by the time he was 31 but was a shutout machine in his early 20s.

What could have been.

The Cardinal fans have the luxury of adding pitchers like Cy Young, John Smoltz and Fernando Valenzuela to their list, if someone chose to.

I'd have to think about that more, but that's just some rare, little time played, players that were on the roster. As was Bobby Bonilla.

Wow, this is hard to do. I'm assuming this would be in Playoff or world series type situations where Starting Pitchers would be used as middle relievers.

Went with the original posts format, but I took one relief pitcher, and added one man to my bench, and added a manager as well. And whether they are in the Hall of Fame.

What do you guys think?

I'm with you with the exception of Flood. Has to be Edmonds in CF.

I was conflicted on a few of them. I tried and tried to find someone who was better at 3B, but in my opinion, Rolen is the best 3B option, so I went with it.

CF was difficult too. If I had to change one thing, Edmonds would be inserted there. But I would bump Flood off entirely, because I'm not taking Slaughter off for Flood.

C - Pudge
1B - Chris Davis
2B - Michael Young
3B - Beltre
SS - Arod (the version that mashed for the Rangers of course)
LF - Choo (need the Leadoff OBP)
CF - Josh Hamilton
RF - Ruben Sierra
DH - Juan Gonzalez

SPs
Nolan Ryan
Yu Darvish
Bert Blyleven
Fergie Jenkins
Kenny Rogers (loved how fast he always pitched)

Bench
C - Jim Sundberg (think that's spelled right)
IF - Elvis
IF - Mark Macklemore
IF - Palmeiro
IF - Mark Teixeira
OF - Craig Gentry (speed and defense)
OF - Rusty Greer

Pen
Joe Nathan
Neftali Feliz (before we messed him up by trying to make him a starter)
John Wettland
Eric Gagne (I think he joined us briefly)

I think they could get by with just four relievers, plus the rangers kinda have a history of suck in the pitching department. I'm sure I messed something up but I'm fairly young to so the older teams are not immediately in my mind

Ogando, Michael Young, Leonys Martin and all Texas Rangers
