Ruth.

I'm curious as to how you are going to do starting pitchers, poll-wise. Have 5 polls for SPs, with pitchers who don't win vote-wise getting rolled over into the next? No poll and straight out write-in votes? Hm..

I dint vote for him but Frank Robinson is a greatly underrated player.

I agree, but still can't see him top 4 even to be honest. I voted for both Ruth and Aaron, both are worthy of starting in right and I'm not even sure Ruth has the edge over Hank

I voted for Aaron and Clemente.

Defense greatly influences my choices in RF, hence the reason I did not choose Ruth.

His power is fantastic, but Aaron and Clemente had power, speed and great defense.

Clemente and Heilmann were very similar hitters, with an edge to Heilmann offensively. Defensively Clemente makes up the difference and then some.

As much as I love Roberto Clemente, is there anyone other than Ruth that you can even make an argument for. Aaron is a distant second and Aaron was a great player, but Ruth is Ruth.

Ugh. I haven't figured that out yet. I'll come up with something. I'm going to do a DH (players who played more at DH than on the field) for ***** and giggles in between OF and SPs.

For much of his career Babe Ruth was a good outfielder.

Maybe have a thread where everyone writes in their top 5 pitchers, tally them up after like 50+ posts and make a (separate) poll with the top ten vote getters and have up to 5 selections on the poll. ::shrugs:: Just throwing out some ideas...just be prepared for some backlash no matter what your poll(s) look like :grouphug:

By the same token, Aaron is Aaron. Not sure you can consider him a 'distant' second when I'm sure he's in nearly everyone's conversation for greatest player all time. Ruth is Ruth because of popularity, the whole Sox to the Yankees thing, the curse of the Bambino. Don't get me wrong he was a great player and at the end of the day I'd probably give him the nod for greatest all-time but what Hank Aaron did is really unbelievable especially when you see all these guys in the steroid era today.

I'm actually sorta stunned that Ruth is getting the consideration that he is. As an overall player, I don't put him in the same conversation as Clemente & Aaron.

I think when a player is widely regarded as the greatest player of all-time, the position he played becomes irrelevant. I mean, if you think about it, if you ARE the greatest player of ALL-TIME, how could you NOT be the greatest at the position you played? :)

What does Aaron have on Ruth? Clemente has defense, no doubt. But Aaron? Ruth did everything Aaron did and then some...

I agree to a point, but greatest of all time as labeled by who? That's the beauty of baseball, and sports in general. The 'greatest of all time' label is very subjective and open to one's personal interpretation. I personally don't believe Ruth was the same caliber of ballplayer that a Clemente or Aaron was. Yes, they played in different eras, but had black ballplayers been a part of the all-white baseball world, I don't think Ruth's numbers would have been as gaudy. Just my opinion.

Speed. And when you're talking about the greatest RF of all-time I simply will not consider whether or not that player was a good pitcher in the least bit
