In the late 80′s and early 90′s Printers were looking at ways to improve the printing process. One of the problems was that too many chemicals were used in printing and exposure and caused health concerns for factory workers. These chemicals also added cost to the printing process that card companies sought to eliminate all together. Some of the sheets worked, some didn’t and as anything in printing with inconsistent results goes the process was scrapped.

The Donruss company had a few boxes of the 1990 Donruss “Aqueous Test” boxes get out to the public and player collectors typically fight over their player. The top stars can see big time auction value. Recently some unopened packs hit ebay, this drew in player collectors and speculators a like as some were looking for the elusive superstar such as George Brett while others merely wanted to try their luck with a high end pack.

One FCB user hit the jackpot with a super star laden pack. It contained Nolan Ryan, Don Mattingly, Roger Clemens, and Dale Murphy all in the same pack. This guy flipped a $300 pack into at least $3000 as the Nolan Ryan sells for about $1800 and the Mattingly is at about $1200.

If buying these yourself, be aware that these are now frequently faked. You have to do your home work and know what a real test card of that specific player looks like. Here are a few points to consider when shopping. The Aqueous test slanted print on the back of the card is always in the same place for every player. Every Hershiser will have the test words printed in exactly the same place with exactly the same slant, but other players may have different placement. The words “Aqueous Test” are actually printed on the card. This is not a stamp, and it will not look like it is thrown on top of other inks on the back of the card. Mind the font face, because all of the real cards use the same size and style. Keep an eye on this thread for more information on this new pack find as it develops. Hit read more to to see a full checklist of what cards come in Aqueous form.

Has an approximate print run been estimated for these?

One of the members here has something like 9 of his player and has seen more, so I'd say the print run is at least 10 of each.

I don' think these cards are extremely rare, I own 9 Robby Thompson's, I lost out on one recently and there is one in the PSA population report, that makes 11 know Thompson's. I've also lost out on about 4 or 5 other Thompson's in the last couple of years, but I may own some of those now as they happen pop up on eBay from time to time and I've never kept track of who won the auctions. This means that there are at least 11 but maybe up to 20 copies of the Thompson card in circulation. If these cards came from complete sheets then there at least that many copies for each player on the sheet with Thompson.

I don't think these are frequently faked. There has only been a couple "fakes" to rear their ugly heads, and it hasn't been for years and years...Anytime anyone talks about fakes, it is from that same group. People frequently worry about fakes, but I would not say they are frequently faked. I personally have never seen or heard of another fake any other time...

The general lack of public knowledge makes these easy targets. Every where I have read says that there are fakes out there. More fakes than baseline expensive cards.

"into at least $3000" is highly speculative. Based on his Mattingly and Clemens sell, the Ryan and Murphy would need a combined sell of a bit over $2230 to hit that mark.
Now that the big time Mattingly collectors have one in their collection that price dropped off a lot. The last one sold for $638.

Correct. I only know of 2 "pushes" of fakes.

There was the website years back (sometime pre 2009) that was selling many of these. They had some cards that were never made "aqueous". Theirs also had a larger font. Site was soon 404. But sadly after some were sold.

2/2012 -- jcalabria2012 was buying acct. for raw '90 Donruss. cardcraze2012 was selling acct. Used stamp. Correct font. But a stamp. Many smeared. Stamp was placed wrong, cards #'d too high etc. Myself and others (hopefully) contacted winning bidders as a few were sold.

Well 20 copies of a card from 1990 is still pretty rare! I think 15-20 of each player seems feasible right now as I know of at least 9 Cal Ripkens that are out there. Definitely not as rare as the 1-5 per player some people used to estimate, but still a pretty rare issue. Unless this seller starts dumping even more onto the market!

I think you can count on this to happen. I have a bad feeling that someone found a huge stash and is just starting the purge process. You might be seeing these packs pop up on ebay once a month and the star singles weekly.

I went with the last end prices on ebay. That is the best any blogger can do.

I agree that they are indeed rare, but two years ago I believed there were no more than 5 copies of any player, so I WAY overpaid for my first couple of Thompson cards. I'm curious to see if these packs contain cards from the entire Aqueous run or just cards from certain sheets. Most of my Thompson cards I can trace to Chandy. The first 8 packs listed didn't contain any new Thompson's, waiting to see if the batch of 7 did or maybe if the newly listed three packs do. The fact that the seller only listed three packs this last time leads me to believe his supply is almost out but I could be totaly wrong.

At least you didn't (hopefully) have to pay Nolan Ryan/Kirby Puckett/Will Clark prices! :) I've got 2 of the Cal Ripkens and probably overpaid a bit for each now, but luckily they didn't go over $500!

No, I'm still waiting for the Clark prices to come back to Earth. I paid around $50 for the first couple of card. There are extremely few Thompson cards, not even certified auto's, that sell for more than $10.

There are four known Butlers so far. I've got two (one from Chandy and the other from the recent 'find'), one in the pop report, and one that's currently listed. Since Ron has confirmed at least 11 Thompsons, I'm wondering if all players were produced in equal numbers. If so, where the heck are the other seven Butlers?
