So time for an annoying "How do you tell them apart?" question.

I checked Beckett and the examples look pretty identical. I'm guessing there is a difference in the foil on the name. Can anyone clarify what the difference is so I can mark this stupid Berkman base with the correct set

So if the name isn't shiny it's retail?

Simple enough. Thanks.

Now to find someone that actually opened retail packs of this stuff *bangs head against wall*

You might want to try sportlots. I think that's where I found my Wilson retail.

Also, the Hobby and Retail Gold versions can be equally confusing.

Yea, one has gold foil names, and one has silver foil I do believe. I think Retail is the one with silver foil. Not 100% sure.

The Gold Medallion were weird, the retail was #d/999 (I think) and the hobby wasn't numbered.

Ugh. I hate this kind of stuff. If you are going to make variations (which I love) then mark them. Have it say "retail" under the number on the back. Donruss was HORRIBLE about this.

Well I looked for you but all I have is the hobby.I think the only reason I have the hobby is because I busted quite a bit because of the small prices on boxes.

This scan comes in handy every once in a while. The gold medallions are pictured below. The retail is on the left and the hobby on the right. The base look the same except for silver foil. The retail gold medallion's are serial numbered out of 999 and the hobby gold medallion's are not numbered.

Ok, so the retail has the silver lining around the name and hobby has the gold? So I need the hobby version.

So confuzzling.

So retail is just less refractor-esque in the foil?

I think I'm just as confused now as I was when I asked

Well...I thought I had it all figured out, and now I'm confused as well

It seems a bit hard to tell the hobby base and gold apart? Is it any easier to tell the difference in person?

I have never seen a version of the Jack Wilson Hobby Gold listed on any site...are these rarer than previous years of Ultra, or is it probably just a case of people being unable to tell the gold and base versions apart?

I'll probably just trade for the stupid card until I find two that look different in person

I don't know what the insert ratio was, but I would assume people could tell when they get a gold. I think it may be more of Jack Wilson not being a household name. He must be a hard player to track cards for. I dread the day when Andruw's cards become the same way. Well, they are starting to already.

Here is a side by side view (Does it make it easier to tell?):

So retail has silver foil and hobby has gold foil? And Gold Medallions have the *name* in gold, not the foil around it?
