While eating lunch I was thinking about prospecting and the guys I moved too early/too late and just right. There were three that come to mind, with one I think will offer another chance

SOLD TOO EARLY: Ryan Braun Bowman Chrome

SOLD TOO LATE: Phillip Hughes[could get another chance. He's a Yankee].

SOLD JUST IN TIME: Francisco Liriano

Who are your big three?

Sold Too Early: Clay Buchholz :( . I did double up on him, but could have made a ton more after the no-no.

Sold Too Late: Alex Gordon chrome auto. I bought for $135, and didn't sell when they reached $225  . I just started prospecting at the time, so I'm excused :)

Sold Just In Time: Ryan Braun. I sold a few things before the craze which I almost quadrupled my money, but still had four base chrome autos to sell for $185 a piece when he went nuts.

Sold Too Early: Bruce and Tommy Hanson: Bruce Sterling sold at 50. Hanson Red Refractor sold at $200 probably could have gotten close to 300-350 after he frequently was on the Hot List.

Sold too Late: Alex Gordon: Base Chrome and Chrome Auto. Didn't lose any money on it because I pulled it, just a bummer didn't sell it in time.

Sold just in time: Scott Thorman and Ryan Braun: Thorman's Bowman auto after I picked it up at a show for 5 bucks sold for $50, and the Bruan Sterling Ref. Auto sold for 175 (bought for 50).

Too Early: Too many to list, how about Michael Taylor.

Just Right: Matt Laporta, $600 orange anyone?

Too late: Jordan Zimmerman Elites.

I too was going to sell my bruce stuff but held off. 2 of the 3 tcu ref autos came back 9.5's. 2009 could see those increase in value

Too early: Mat Gamel - last year at this time, his golds were around 20 bucks, I sold when they hit 60ish
Too late: Jay Bruce - didn't have much, got in late, and waited for him to make a huge mlb impact. oops
Just right: Max Scherzer - only had like 5 cards, but that 150 investment made over 800 bucks quickly.

dang, there's a lot more - I'm usually on the too early side.

Too early: Phil Hughes. Sold my multiple chrome refs in the $125 range, I think they went way higher than that.
Too late: Can't think of anyone that sticks out a lot, but there are definitely plenty.
Just right: Micah Owings...4 gold refs for over $100 each :D

Sold Too Early: Jacoby Ellsbury Sterling Auto, bought for $20 sold for $50, I was just getting into prospecting and it was my first good flip, or so I thought.

Sold Too Late: Ross Detwiler, guy has gone into a tail spin. But this might end up being sold too early if he comes back strong next year.

Sold Just Right: Colby Rasmus, sold a chrome auto for $120 at the peak in Spring Training.

Sold Josh Hamilton and did well....Too many to list that I still have laying around.

Phil Hughes prices will rebound when he gets back pitching well, maybe a few game hot streak next year. I will be unloading then, hopefully Joba can excel as well so I can move the dual auto I am sitting on. I can hope right????

I would not have sold Detwiler.

Too Early - Trevor Cahill - Sold Base Auto, Ref Auto and X Auto about 6 months ago. Needed the money and thought the prices were good at the time. Whoops!

Too Late - Alex Gordon - Sold 06 Chrome auto and got about $80 for it when there was a time they were going for $235.

Just on time - Johnny Cueto - Got nearly $100 for 9 Base Chrome's. Thought I did ok.

I've only been prospecting for about 2 years. These are just my experiences. I'm sure I'll have better and worse examples in each category in the future.

Too early - Delmon, Kershaw, Denard Span
Too late - Ellsbury; got some right, but I should have sold them all and bought them back. I'll still profit on all the cards I have left, though.
Just right - Bruce, Papelbon
