Has a player with no pro experience ever gotten #1? Any chance he pulls it off?

I personally have my Top 5 looking like this:

1- Dom Brown
2- Mike Trout
3- Bryce Harper
4- Mike Moustakas
5- Jesus Montero

Thoughts? Any other guesses on the top 5?

It'll be either Harper or Trout. Personally I'd give it to Trout, but BA places more emphasis on potential than performance.

I say Harper takes it.

EDIT - As for a top 5, Teheran and Hellickson belong there.

Here's mine:

1) Trout
2) Harper
3) Montero
4) Hellickson
5) Teheran

I'd say the smart money should be on Harper at this point.

I agree with this. Brown is going to have to fight for his spot in ST and he is still very raw as he proved when he was called up late last year.

I agree with your top 5, I think Trout should be #1.

While possibly true, this doesn't affect his spot on BA's top 100 prospects list(talking about Dom Brown).

With the future potential he has alone, Harper should be number one on any list that takes future potential into consideration. Add in a very nice (albeit short) performance in pro ball and I don't see how Harper falls anywhere but #1.

I actually think Montero should be #1. Besides Harper he clearly has the most advanced bat for his age. Although I like Trout, I don't see him becoming a true impact bat at the Major League level. And although Harper has the best projected power in baseball, Montero is doing it at advanced levels at a young age.

I prefer Montero over Trout as well, although Harper is my pick for #1.

My top 5 would be:
1. Trout
2. Harper (I have seen him play and he is the real deal)
3. Chapman (he has his B.A eligibility left)
4. Tehran
5. Montero...

others I considered were.
Todd Van Poppel
Ben McDonald
Brad Fuller (big name from the past)
Andruw Jones...

I can't remember exactly if he had any pro experience or not, but in 1992 Brien Taylor's first appearance was at #1. As well as Todd Van Poppel the year prior, and Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2007. Daisuke Matsuzaka's situation was a little different though.

J.D. Drew's first appearance was also #1, but he had some playing time in I think.

Is Freddie Freeman still elgible since his playing time was negligible?

If so his numbers were better than Montero's and Freeman is only 2 month older. He should be High on the Top 100 if he is eligible.

Yes he is, as he has less than 130 AB's in the Majors.

Brown will not have to fight that hard for the Phils RF position. The reason why the Phils didn't re sign Werth was for the Dom Brown era to begin. In the minors, Montero is the best prospect.

It's amazing the different impression between those that follow prospects and those that follow major league teams. Brown has been all but written off by most philly sports fans as a bust. They've been clamoring all off season about how the Phillies plan to address the horrible options for RF. It's driving me nuts. I feel like I need to call WIP and The Fanatic on a daily basis to tell them to chill out. Brown will be fine, he didn't get enough time last year and instead of sitting the bench I'd have preferred if he went back to AAA to light the world on fire a little longer. Brown is a stud. I'm looking forward to ST when he will again tear the cover off the ball and everyone else in Philly will take a collective sigh of relief.

As for Harper, I will be shocked if he isn't #1 on this list.

I'm digging the Teheran love displayed in this thread.

It's so true for all teams. Every time a trade is made that involves minor league players fans feel they were screwed or got an awesome deal because the other team got nobodies.

Most Tigers fans have already given up on Porcello. I honestly think other sports have messed up the perception of young baseball players. Almost every HOFer didn't come into the league setting the league on fire. It takes a few years. Especially depending on your position. Pitching being the toughest. Just look at any great pitcher's stats his first few seasons. Randy Johnson, Roy Halladay, Greg Maddux, etc. It wasn't until his third stint in the league that Maddux finally dropped his ERA below 5.50.
