I'm personally about 90% vintage after being strictly modern. Anybody else make the transition or consider but didn't go that route? Why or why not?

I personally just like the simplicity and old stuff.

I've never considered it because, and obviously no offense to anyone, I just find it very boring.

Now, If my wallet was huge, maybe that's a different story because then you're dealing with high end graded legends which are rarities.

I just find no excitement in buying an ex '66 rose or 78 rice.

But I do find enjoyment and fun in buying some 18 prospect auto who could turn into a star and following him through the minors into the bigs.

I've been collecting older team sets more and more lately, but have a long ways to go with 50s and 60s stuff. Been meaning to research prices before going into heavily, but never gotten around to it with everything that is going on. Eventually I'll have completed the newer team sets and will only have the older ones left to chase.

I collected both new and old cards until a couple of years ago. But now I mostly collect '50s through '80s cards. I still like base Topps sets, but the rest of the new stuff, especially the unlicensed sets and prospect sets, don't interest me.

I spend 80-90% of my budget on vintage. I buy enough new to get autographs TTM or IP.

I was actually reverse, I started out with vintage - specifically HOF rookies in PSA 8 holders - had some really nice gems like Bob Gibson '59 topps and Carl Yaz '60 topps in PSA 8 holders

But I always also collected Yankees
And slowly my love and excitement for late 90's inserts coupled with Jeter gaining popularity and card value and accumulating hits made me shift my entire focus to just Jeter.

I've sold off EVERYTHING vintage that I had to grow the Jeter insert parallel set.

I will say modern cards do have the appeal of uniqueness and lots of variety to chose from.
As opposed to just one card per year by topps I have a multitude of sets, companies, brands and parallels to choose from. Granted I complain a lot that there is just too much variety - but that gives me the opportunity to literally pick and choose which set / year / rainbow to chase.

Just my 2 cents

Wish I could have afforded to continue the HOF rookie PC but couldn't keep it up with that Jeter market and living life as a husband and father

I collect both pretty evenly. I didn't used to be into vintage until the Topps Million Card Giveaway a few years back. That really got me into vintage and it has grown from there. I really like getting a prospect guy cheap and then someday he becomes a star, but I also like knowing I have a card that's 40+ years old.

I recently started getting into pre-war, specifically T206 and T212 tobacco cards. I'm slowly, but surely, building a collection of 1909 T212s, but they are not easy to come by. I also got my dad into them, and he's purchased a fair amount of tobacco cards since we started collecting together. There's just something about cards that were created only to collect (and sell cigarettes!), but not to speculate on.

Most of my new acquisitions are new cards: current player collections and set building projects. I do occasionally get a vintage single, if I find a nice deal at a rare show. But the fact is in the last couple years I've moved away from cards. I've been in the hobby for almost 25 years as an adult, and going back to the 70s as a kid, and I just don't get excited by much anymore, old or new. For years I've been looking forward to building the black refractor set from Topps Heritage this year. It finally comes out, I got about 6 cards in, and the blahs set in. The things that do excite me are priced out of reach (I think a decent copy of a Mayo Cut Plug Cap Anson may be the last card I really, really want but can't bring myself to spend $6K on). The cards in my closet are not very satisfying, anymore, either. All the 70s star cards are one thing, but a 1966 Koufax here, a 1933 Goudey Adolph Luque there, a small stack of T-206s (nice names, like Speaker, Waddell, and Collins), some 1952 Topps, are nice but I just want something more coherent. My mindset is for set-building, either a complete set or a run of a player or something. And then there's the expense. Many times I've thought about building a PSA-registry set of 1933 Goudey (about 4, nothing crazy) but I just haven't found it in me to dive in. That said, I have been working on my 1955 Bowman and 1941 Play Ball sets for over 20 years now, and I really need to finish them. I just need commons for the 55s but stars for the 41s. I need to lay off the Magic cards for a while and finish those. Selling one could pay for the other.

My two favorite sets...1933 Tattoo Orbit and 1934 Goudey, so slowly building those sets has been fun. The Tattoo Orbit is a much bigger challenge.

Ah, 1955 Bowman. Where else can you get a free color TV with every card:) I thought it was a fun set to put together, though the umpire cards were a pricey part of the set (think those were the bicycle spoke cards for most)

Up until 2 years ago I only had modern cards, mostly prospects. Kind of got bored with that and decided I was missing out by not having some vintage to ooh and ahh about 25 years from now. I started buying lower grade HOF RC's of all the older stars I could think of in all sports: Gretzky, Cobb, 33 Goudey Ruth, Jordan, Payton, Mays, Aaron, MAravich, Williams, Ryan, Musial, Jackie R etc... I've now found myself stuck again. I've gotten all of the vintage that I really wanted except for a 1951 Bowman Mantle so i'm back to mainly prospects now. I will probably go back when I sell off this batch of prospects and pick up some more but i'm just not a set collector or non-RC kind of collector.

I've gone back and picked up a few nice pre-war cards of the older stars. I would pick up more but they are very pricey and I do worry about recouping my money from them eventually, although they've actually appreciated from what I paid. Also at the prices for the ones I like I would only be able to buy two or three cards a year. So I usually try to pick up one nice vintage card a year, along with my modern purchases. Over time I've been able to put together a nice collection of pre-war and 30's through 50's singles. I enjoy the historic players/cards just as much as the new cards as they each have their own unique attributes.
