Just cool to see Killebrew, Mays, Aaron, Mathews etc in that format. I've seen them all before but it has been along time. Great stuff.

It's a great show but if you notice, the host is not fond of black players at all.

I absolutely love that show, I've seen almost all of the shows a couple times over during the past 10 years or so on various ESPN networks. They also sell the entire series on three DVD's, pretty cheap on Amazon.com.

I love the ump, one away, two away.

On a baseball card related note...
The Rarest Baseball Card known in the Hobby is related to that show! :)

1959esslingerbeeraaron.jpg

1959 Esslinger Beer HR Derby Hank Aaron
(only a single example, Aaron pictured above, has ever been discovered....discovered in 2008)

Notice, when compared to the common HR Derby cards.... how the players name was moved to the top to accommodate the beer ad at bottom.

PS I sold this Poor (1) graded Aaron for $4K earlier this year.
What would a Mantle (if it existed) book for in an 8 grade??? :) Makes you wonder whats still to be found.

I have never seen that Aaron. That's awesome.

It's technically tied for rarest card in the hobby with 4BH Kelly, Reccius Wagner, etc

I believe I've seen every episode, care to explain why you feel this way? Any examples?

Never noticed the Black player observation, Im sure you can say that about any show from the late 1950's if you take remarks and comments out of context....

On the HR Derby Esslinger Beer card...
Yes its tied with a few others I know :)

OK... Tied for the Rarest "Type Card" example

2nd Rarest would be the T231 Fans Cigarettes card with only 2 known examples ever seen (one of them Bigbee hasnt been seen in over 35 years, and may not exist anymore) :)

I do have other cards that are the only know examples of the "type" (ie 1941 D-Unc. Kroger Bread), and Im sure a few other advanced "Type Collectors" do to... Leon Luckey @ Net54 has the the only existing T231 (HR Baker) which is very cool since it actually is listed in the old ACC (American Card Catalog) with an ACC#.... T231

PS. That Reccuis Honus Wagner card is really a tradecard in style and design with its product price on front and pro trade union poem on back (very different than a baseball card), and is now thought to have been issued much later than the 1899 date on its slab and in catalogs. The phone number printed on the card doesnt help (the style phone number spans many years), but there are a few Wagner cigar boxes with the exact same photo that date to 1919. And IMO no company would use Wagner on a card in 1899 when he had only played Pro ball for less than 2 years with only a .309 Career Batting Average at the time....

Fun stuff.

Sorry to derail this thread, I too was addicted to the HR Derby Show, used to watch it all the time many years ago on reruns in the 80's-90's.

Love the show but don't get ESPN Classic anymore. I loved to watch the episodes with Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron.
