I have used mlb.tv for the past couple seasons. I like it, but was thinking about trying extra innings instead this year. Love to hear some input.

Thanks

I love the Extra Innings package especially since all games now have the HD option. I've never used MLB.tv but I think the blackouts can be an issue. Extra Innings has a few blackout issues but not compared to MLB.tv from what I understand.

I think it's a no brainer - MLB.TV -- ALL the games (in HD when available), not just games on RSN's like EI. MLB.TV is about half the price of EI so quite a bit of savings there, too, and MLB.TV has archives including archives of your local blacked out team(s) so you can watch the game about 90 minutes after it is over. MLB.TV also has audio and I like the fact you can stream it to several devices so you aren't tied to just watching it on a PC.

Blackouts are the same for EI or MLB.TV so that isn't an issue in deciding what option to get.

Only thing about MLB.TV that sucks is spring training games are not available on streaming devices like my Roku (or PS3 or boxee) - that starts Opening Day - and that most of the spring games are produced in SD but that's not the fault of MLB.TV but rather the cheapness of the broadcasters in saving production costs just to offer a few games back home to the fans.

mlb.tv EASILY! Another benefit of it not already mentioned is that you can pick which broadcast/announcers you watch. Can't do that on EI and if you're like me, you can't stand 90% of the announcers out there today.

You can often do this on EI as well.

How do you run MLB.tv through your television?

I would assume using your internet browser on Ps3/Xbox/Wii to get to the site and watch it there

Is that correct?

I never thought about doing that

The Ps3 Has a free called MLB app that once you put log in details gets you all the games in HD quality. You can also go back and watch the games at any inning any time. From what I read its suppose to really good.

I have the PS3 and bought the half season package last year (they always drop the price in August). It is excellent. Until the season switches (maybe Feb 15, Mar 1 I dont know) you can watch any game. I went back and watched the game that metallicalex and I went to and found us.....World Series, all playoffs, all star game, yada yada yada
Quality is great. If you dont have a great connection, dont bother though. I run my PS3 hardwired to the wifi router. If you can do this, do it

you can use BOXEE for MLB.tv.

link here: http://www.boxee.tv/

of course there is the one time charge of purchasing the Boxee, but the savings you get using mlb.tv instead of extra innings is more than worth it!

good luck.

If you have a PS3 - MLB.tv

If you don't have a PS3 then it's pretty much a toss up.....depends on money and convenience.
As someone without much extra cash - pre-ps3 app I still went with MLB.tv because you could pay a small fee per month and cancel if need be.
If money isn't an issue - I said convenience because it probably depends which is better to you - being able to watch the games on your TV or have the flexibility to watch games from different devices/places. So depends which you prefer.

If you computer has a video out option (like S-video) then you can just run the S-video to an avi converter and plug in in the AV slot on your tv. I've got the sound hooked up to some cheap computer speakers.

This is how my room is set up and I've never had issues.

Thanks for all the responses. I have a plug that I can connect my laptop to my hd tv and watch it and I have a PS3. Also have the iphone 4 with MLB At Bat app which allows you to watch games if you have mlb.tv, so I guess I am leaning towards that.

Thanks!

Wish Xbox would get mlb.tv too. Seems weird considering they have generally lead the way with streaming content on video game systems.

It's probably something like the xbox doesn't do the video format that MLB uses. I know the WII doesn't (thus why I can't use my WII).

PS3 seems to have the right codec for the video format, my Roku does, and someone else added Boxee. There are also select smartphones/apps that you can watch MLB.TV over but I am without a smartphone so I don't know the details of what's supported/available specifically.

And of course you can hook up the PC to a tv monitor if your pc has a video output (or if you can use a VGA cable to a HD monitor and set up your HD monitor as an extended desktop and put your MLB.TV player window on that desktop so that it shows up on your HD monitor while your true PC monitor remains for web browsing or other apps, etc.

I use my laptop hooked up to my tv as well, and run the audio through my receiver. How is the quality on the Roku?

What exactly is a Roku/Boxee? A device which transmits the picture from your computer onto your TV?

Roku and Boxee are little boxes that you hook up to the Internet (via ethernet cable or some by wireless to your router) and hook up a HDMI or component video cable to your tv. you have an on-screen interface where you select what available video services you want to view (some free, some subscription like MLB.TV, Amazon or Netflix) and you can watch streaming internet videos/audios through your tv set. It fairly well makes it easy to watch internet streaming without having to tie up a PC or figure how how to hook up a PC to a tv monitor.

Roku quality is great at times, bad at other times. First half of last year a lot of buffering/dropped connections when trying to watch a game - presumably the server at MLB wasn't able to handle the roku load. I heard PS3 was a little better and boxee didn't exist last season as a stand-alone box, only as a PC app. Roku got better the second half of the season as I guess many people gave up on their teams or due to the Roku problems and freed up bandwidth for those who hung in there. Overnights are my best time to watch baseball and I didn't have very many problems as the server load was lighter when I watched the archives with my Roku.
