If Cal Ripken did not play in 2632 straight games, would he make the Hall of Fame? Being 17, I never saw him in his prime, and am just wondering what you guys think. Two key stats--- 431 bombs... 276 average

EDIT- Also without 3000 hits.... Now I know this is a lot of what ifs... but please entertain me

Ripken in the HOF without the sttreak? I see a great hitter with borderline numbers but do great htiters make the HOF?
ROY then 2 MVP, lots of silver slugger and all star games and 2 gold gloves.

i don't see how he was third in mvp voting with those numbers like 20 hr and .257 avg

with 3000 hits he gets in. without the streak and 3000 hits i dont know if he gets in. I do not think he does. But with 3000 Hits, thats pretty much a automatic, 500 HR is not automatic anymore but i think 3000 will always be automatic

You wait.I will bet people will get in with even less homers and I think its going to cause controversy big time.Especially when the voters are leaving out people Mac, Sosa, and other players who are thought of as roid heads but have not been proven with any factual evidence. Then what will come to light is people saying they would not vote based on something they have no facts to back and there will be a big stink over it.You just wait.

The only argument I have ever heard is he was more of a stat compiler and had lost his hitting ability and that he barley eeked out the hits at the end of his career. My thoughts are that anyone who ever records any stats is basically compiling them.I never understood that train of thought.I mean...if an MLB club is willing to offer you a roster spot I highly doubt they are going to do so just to help you accomplish a personal record. So if your good enough to play then your deserving of your stats no?

Hall of Famer

This is the key for me that pushes him over the top. The younger crowd needs to realize that in the early to mid 80's, a player with 20+ Home Runs was considered to be quite dangerous. Before Ripken, SS were primarily small, quick, agile guys like Ozzie. If a team was lucky, their SS was a lead off or number 2 hitter but on most he was 8th or ninth.

back when i was the age of our FCB teens, a .300/30hr/100rbi season was AMAZING. So anything over 20 was pretty damn good.

While he was playing in his prime, he was the best offensive SS in the game. Hall Of Fame voting is about what a player did while playing his peers at the time he played... so Ripken Jr. can't be compared with players now days, because he was the best then. I say without the streak, he still would have been first ballot.

even if he had onlcy collected say 2800 hits, with 430+ homeruns, a roy, a couple gold gloves, im sure he would have made it in. maybe not first ballot, but he would be good

I think Cal's a great player, and Hall of Fame worthy for sure, but I have always believed that he is very overrated due to the streak.
