Well, I have been saying for years that he is garbage in the field. I guess this just proves that his gold gloves were sheerly based on reputation and the fact that the "good defenders" switched leagues or positions (a-rod, vizquel, etc).

A group that tracks every ball hit in the majors says Derek Jeter is the worst fielder in baseball. Stats guru Bill James, author of the "Baseball Abstract," and a panel of nine other voters, ranked Jeter 22nd among all major-league shortstops, with one calling Jeter "the least effective defensive player in the major leagues, at any position." Jeter received one 10th-place vote in balloting for the 2008 Fielding Bible Awards, announced yesterday. One panel member comes from Baseball Info Solutions (BIS), a group that ... well, just say they do their research. "They watched film of every major-league game, and had recorded every ball off the bat by the direction in which it was hit [the vector], the type of hit [groundball, flyball, line-drive, popup, etc.] and by how hard the ball was hit [softly hit, medium, hard hit]," according to James. (New York Post)

How many posts until a Yankees fan brings up the lame, "I ran into the stand 6 steps after I made the catch", catch.????

He's hardly the worst fielder in the league, but he's definitely nothing to brag about.

Your poll question doesn't match your topic. Are you asking us if we think he's the worst? (the answer is "no.") Or are you asking us if he's just kinda bad with the glove (the answer is "yeah, kinda.")

Well??

Would you really take jeter over AROD in the field? The answer is a resounding NO. Arod was a MUCH better shortstop than Jeter, whether the fielding percentage shows it or not.

The only advantage Jeter has over ARod is that his personal life is less of a mess.

Dont those number mean they are basically the same fielder at the position?? Clearly Id take A-Rods bat over Jeter.... but I cant say id easily choose A-Rod over Jeter for the field.

Then maybe you should watch more baseball games. Don't forget that fielding percentage does NOT take into consideration Arm strength, range, and plays that Arod can make that Jeter can't. It ONLY takes into account errors made. I am sure you realize this, but it seems you aren't getting past pure stats.

after watching Jeter game and game out I wouldnt say hes the worst fielder. I agree with no competion other than Michale Young & John Mcdonald, McDonald get no love hes amazing everytime i watch him play but otherwise theirs no other good SS in the AL. W/ guys like Vizquel, Tejada and Nomar in the NL and Arod at 3b Jeter finally got a GG and honestly i dont think he deserves. I would say im one of the only yankees fans that dislikes Jeter. He annoys me the most. But like I said he isdefinalty not the worst but not quite GG caliber

Anyone who thinks Jeet is the WORST fielder in all of MLB is a complete moron. And obviously has never seen Adam Kennedy play.

Great point! I do concur. I don't think he is worst in the league, but it does mean something to me that a respected basebal man and statistician thinks so......

Way to many funny things the OP said. Not sure where to begin, but I think we can start with we all knew what this is telling us especially after the MLB players poll ranked him pretty low earlier in the season.

Obviously not the WORST fielder, but he is not great by any means. Also the Poll question is poorly written. I voted Yes because Jeter does stink in the field, but again he isn't the worst.

I definitely see what you're ttryin to say here but:

1) Jeter has tremendous range (and can be seen diving for balls that some people might not make an attempt at)

2) He has incredible arm strength...you know his "patented" play where he goes deep into the hole and jumps even further into the hole and throws a bullet across his body to first base? I don't even know how many times i've seen that, but that's one hell of a display of arm strength.

IMO it's a tossup between Jeter and A-Rod in the field.

And by the way, there is just no way Jeter is the absolute worst fielder in baseball, or even at short stop. He might not be a gold glover like some people seem to think, but he is far from the worst in the league.

He isnt but people like to be troll like and post these topics trying to get a reaction out of the yankee fans, Its completely obvious in this case. Anyone who says they dont want Jeter on their team at one point is a complete liar who is just blind raging again since there is zero to post about their team. This conversation is over a year old but yet the trolls like to bring it back up like its truth, meanwhile its just another Yankee hater who crunched stats until he got something.
