i thought I would ask this question and get the opinion of FCB. A product recently came out that has different packing for hobby and retail, especially the retail packs that are in Target. I had been waiting for the product and saw a new box on the shelf and purchased 10 packs. In three of the packs, I pulled rookies from them and the other packs had nothing. I was happy with that in that the product promises rc's 1:4. I noticed that the packs with the rookies were thicker than the others. I went back into the retail outlet and purchased three additional packs that were thick. Most of the time I stay away from retail thick packs because they usually have decoy cars and nothing else. The three purchased packs had the other 3 rc's. To test this I went across town and purchased for the retail outlet 5 thick packs and each had a rookie. I did no feel/bend/mutilate/fan or any of the usual pack searching techniques. I simply purchased the thick packs. The question is is this pack searching in the truest sense of the activity? And as a follow-up would anyone here intentionally purchase packs that you know have nothing but base cards in them if you are trying to pull the rookies?

you did nothing wrong...IMO it is perfectly OK to use your eyeballs to determine the packs you'd like to puchase.

Re: DID I DO ANYTHING WRONG?

I think you are okay. Most of the times the packs that are thicker have either a decoy card, an extra card in the pack or a checklist card. I just opened a box of bowman draft and all the thick packs either had an extra card in the pack or a checklist in the pack.

Most of the people that pack search will bring a scale to weigh the packs, bend the packs or fan the packs and run their fingernail along the back to try to feel for the sticker or serial numbering.

It's packsearching.
Just because you didn't damage a pack doesn't mean you didn't search them.
You dug through the box and picked only the thick packs.
So you prevented other collectors from having the same chance of pulling the rookies.
As a reverend, I'd think you'd know this is ethically wrong.

Thats a lesser form of pack searching, but the essentially the same thing.

I guess if you "broke the system" you'd be more inclined to purchase the thicker packs. Its a tough question to answer, but I don't buy retail so I might be the wrong guy responding to this.

When its hobby, I've never tried to pack search & I always just pick a few packs at random. If what you are doing isn't a form a pack searching, then why would you subconsciously come on here to confess. Somewhere inside of you there is a little guilt whether you realize it or not, thats why you posted this.

As far as wrong/right, its up to you to decide IMO.

Re: DID I DO ANYTHING WRONG?

I have a tone of pack searching experience as I used to buy cards from retail packsearchers.

If you are feeling the top of each card to find a thicker card or you are running your finger down the front to feel an indention...you are pack searching.

But I used to let the "sight" searches "search" all they like because they'd end up opening close to the entire box if not the entire box with their method.

Yes. Obviously you think you did also by posting this thread.

This ruins the hobby and fun for others. Now when I walk into that same store to buy packs from the same set, my odds are decreased because you "searched" for all the packs with rookies. Totally unfair, and to answer your question, Yes that is wrong.

Lets put it this way, you found a way to get all the hits and now the 20 some odd people behind you to buy packs from that box have no chance to get the rcs now

Well, if you feel the need to write it here, I'd say yes.

Thank you very much. If that was the case I would have stayed on the sideline and not said anything. Believe me, if the companies make this product that obvious, I am NOT going to buy $30 in packs knowing that $12 of that will yield nothing. It is not a conscious issue, because I know that there are people on every board that do worst. the reason I asked was because a thread about this was removed because the moderators felt like this was PS'ing. I had no problem with them removing the thread, but to me it is no differnt than plucking a melon or checking the date on milk.

MyPens66: probably so. It's a conscious issue, but it does not bother me enough to go an buy the rest of the box knowing that I am throwing money away.

lkk: true, but buying packs anywhere can have that situation. Let me say this, even though it is obvious, I won't purchase dud pack on purpose.

for all those that say this is wrong
if you knew you were bound to get a cut auto out of every thick pack in a certain product wouldnt you look through the packs for the thick ones.

Re: DID I DO ANYTHING WRONG?

With knowing what he knows now, how is he supposed to go back to buying packs that are not as thick as the others. Buying packs is hard enough as it is. I just don't see how anyone could turn down getting a hit if they knew exactly where it would be.

I find it more wrong if he lists them on ebay and sells them as hot packs. I find it stupid to continue to buy the product and turn a blind eye to what you already know.

Exactly.
That's what's so wrong about packsearching.
Anyone who buys the remaining packs has almost no shot of pulling good cards,.
But they pay the same price and think the odds are what is stated on the packs.
Of course, most of us would want to use what we know and buy the thick packs.
But it's still technically packsearching, whether it's right or wrong.

Re: DID I DO ANYTHING WRONG?

If you can tell that a pack is thicker just by looking at it and also know that the thick packs contain the good cards, I'd by them in a heartbeat. Only an idiot or someone with money to burn would purposly buy dud packs.

the answer for most of us would be yes. Whether spending $3 or $300 on a pack, no one wants to get all base. Everyone is trying to pull the BDP autos, that's the reason I buy boxes instead of packs, because it improves my odds of getting one.
