Would you rather have a card with a bat barrel/knob or a really, really nice patch the same size of your player or team?

Example:

Amazing patch

Or

Bat Barrel/Knob

EthierPCScans820_1.jpg

Please post up one of each and discuss why you would make your choice.

If my player had more than 3 bat barrel/knob cards then I would choose the patch. However, I think Ethier only has 2 maybe 3 and with that number being as low as it is, I would choose the barrel card. I love the patch but the barrel is harder to get. This is why I would choose the barrel.

Post them up and get this thread rolling. I can't wait to see what is available to choose from.

I would choose the barrel because I have many patch cards, a few that are really nice, but the barrels are limited. I will see what pics I can post up when I get home later

I think it depends on what Player you would be after. For me it would easily be Felix Hernandez, and since he is a pitcher in the AL, I would certainly go after a barrel/knob just due to how rarely he actually bats. For me, this would be the same if it was Griffey or Zunino as well, only because the patch logo pieces are much easier to acquire from an availability standpoint versus the barrels/knobs. Then again, depending on the look of the card, that might very well come into play. With your Ethier example, I would choose the patch over the Barrel from a looks standpoint, and hold my money for a knob if there ever was one. I can't remember, but I think I saw your card at the National in 2012 before you finally landed it :)

You are correct that is where it was before GC helped me obtain it. I hear you on the patch in my example, it is a nice patch. But you also know that background story on the barrel. I HAD to have it.

Woot! Oh yeah, I knew you had to have it. At the same time I am so happy you didn't budge at the original asking price, that dude wasn't even trying to work much at the start. Overall, I think the Knob trumps all, but at the same time with Topps and archived auction photo matching it all depends on how confident the piece you are getting comes from. For example, I haven't been picking up much Felix TTT all star patch stuff is because it is worded as workout jersey used. Have you been snagging any other stuff recently?

Not much, just a few things here and there. Haven't scanned anything in forever either.

Bat barrell. I don't trust that a lot of the patches are actually game used, or that the little old ladies gluing the pieces on the cards are always accurate.

A bat barrel is hard to mess up and gives me a much greater peace of mind.
Plus, patch logo cards all look similar with players from the same team. Bat barrel cards are relatively unique, and much more rare.

Of course, I'd rather have an entire bat, of which I have several, and they're usually much cheaper than bat barrel cards.

I think most would say Bat barrel or knob as they are limited and rarer (In most cases) but depends on the player. We are not gonna get nice jumbo Logo patches of Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig so for those players (even though they have patch cards) I would choose Barrel or Knob for those players and older player. I think for newer players or non star or super stars it would be a tougher pick.

Also depends on the card. Between these 3 I would choose the knob all day then Logoman (even as nice as it is)

Barrel, Logoman (hell, I loved the non-relic ones Tools did a few years back), Significant patch, knob.

In that order for me...

Assuming that the barrel or knob has not been compromised* when it was put in the card, I'd go for the bat barrel.

* Compromised...as in an autograph card that has been mauled in the production process (A "Randy Jones" autograph that doesn't fit in the window and comes out as "Andy Jon")

Bat knob>barrel top. Card companies are inserting both into cards and claiming them to be the knob.

For me with say my Will Clark PC , for a patch to be competitive to a barrel it would need to be the entire SF logo , and not just part of it or just one letter etc. it would have to be something special to trump the barrel in my opinion. I'd say a full Logoman after that or a bat knob with good markings (not just plain).

Garvey cards just don't have the pop that a lot of cards have these days. The barrel card is mine, the others are not. I guess I would go with the barrel because it is more visually appealing that a knob, but if there was a fantastic jumbo patch, that could easily take #1 . I just have not seen one yet.
