I was wondering why Jon Farrell looked so different than the Red Sox manager does today. Then I realized it's a different guy.

And is that the only card of some of those rookies.
Imagine finally getting a baseball card, and you're wearing goofy school clothes.
Or later in life, showing your kids your only baseball card and it's one of those instead of a uniform.

Couple of notes about 92 bowman.

It was under ordered because not only did the hobby not like bowman (imagine that), but topps decided it was do or die time for the brand as they took it from a cheap srp to a premium srp.

Right before release, topps said that if it didn't sell well, the bowman line would be canned!

When released, it had no fan fare and I'd imagine Topps was ready to kill it but both Piazza and Salmon had monster seasons in 93 which completely blew up this issue.

Because of that, any prospect with potential blew up as collectors and dealers scrambled to find this product.

Lastly, some of the foil cards were incredibly priced because they appeared to be very sp'd.

But in reality, those supposed sp cards turned up in retail and jumbo packs.

This was such a cool set - I remember every year from 1993 almost into the early 2000's a new "hot" card would emerge from that set and it would get popular all over again (Mondesi, Hatteberg, Estes, Nigel Wilson, Urbina, Sele, Byrd, Stairs, Jordan, Bottenfield, and Nied all had runs of popularity) . The only year it WASNT considered popular was in 1992. The names in that set are CRAZY - rookies of Piazza, Rivera, Delgado, Hoffman, Ramirez, Percival, Anderson, second year cards of Thome and Martin, the beautiful gold foil "short prints"...

They cut production way back because 1990 and 1991 had flopped so hard (the designs were ugly and boring and no one had even come close to hearing about 90% of the "prospects"). I remember my local shop getting a box in and having it collect dust for months. Now it's one of the modern classics and a key set from the the last 40 years!
