He's in the fight of the ******* year, and he's cut over a video game??? I can't believe this ****.

As much as I like the UFC, I have heard that they do this to alot of fighters--veteran or rookie.

They want to control every bit about you. I was reading it in someone's autobiography (was either Liddell of Hughes) that Dana and the Fertittas are notorious for trying to pull "Guaranteed Lifetime Rights" on clothes, exclusivity, image, likeness, characteristics, video games, etc, on fighters, and this is the reason alot of young guys and overseas fighters are afraid to go to the UFC, because they demand you give up everything to them.

(Actually, come to think about it, it might be Tito Ortiz who was the one saying this, and this is one reason he decided to walk away)

It really is sad to see Fitch walk, but, I'm glad he held his grounds

And Russ, no, Vince doesnt do this. He has usually a 90 day no compete clause in your contract after you leave or are fired, but, the thing is, as a pro wrestler, you can trademark and buy your gimmick, if you do this, you can use it anywhere you go to wrestle. Scott Levy (Raven) was the most vocal about getting others to do this, but if you dont, after you leave, the WWE owns your gimmick you had with them

I've said it before, but signing with the UFC is signing a fighters life away.

Actually, I can't see a real parallel between what's going on with Fitch to the way Vince McMahon does business with his wrestlers.

If you are a wrestler, and you bring in your own gimmick to the WWE, for instance the Dudley Boyz. They came into the WWE with their Dudley gimmick, the tie died clothes, and their ring names Buh Buh/Bubba and D'Von and Spike Dudley too. Well, most of the time if you come into the WWE and you own your own gimmick, Vince will either create an entirely new gimmick and name for you so he can own the rights to that character for lifetime, and if you leave, you can't use that gimmick outside of the WWE, or anything really similar to it or you can get sued. Well, for some reason, the Dudley Boys thought they were signing papers to allow Vince to use their likeness and names, and if they ever left WWE, they could still take their name and gimmick with them. Well, long story short, when they went to TNA, Vince sent them a cease and desist order over the gimmick and names. The Dudley's said if they had the money they could have fought it and got the rights back, but everyone knew who they were anyway it wasn't that big of a deal to them.
Shane Douglas, Raven, Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Rob Van Dam, Bam Bam Bigelow, etc, all of those guys owned the rights and likeness to their names and gimmicks, so they are able to use theirs anywhere in any organization they please. Which is the smart thing to do. But in most instances, if you come in with a pre-existing name and gimmick Vince will create an entire new persona for you, to save his investment. Only reason Christian could still be called Christian Cage when he left WWE for TNA is because he had already wrestled as Christian Cage around the world before entering the WWE. If Edge went to TNA, he would have to be called Adam Copeland or something. He would be able to be sued by Vince if he used 'The Edge' or something like that. Hell, Vince told TNA that he'd sue them if Kurt Angle's ankle lock was referred to as the 'Angle Lock' because he had that, and various other things with Kurt trademarked and such. Vince is serious about that kind of ****.
Most to the time, like i said, he'll create a new character for wrestlers who either come in with a gimmick, or use their real name. That way he can own those likenesses for lifetime, like he does with say, Goldust. He could have a wrestler in 25 years come back as Goldust instead of Dustin Rhodes. Hell, he did that during the Monday Night Wars with Diesel and Razor Ramon. Remember that? There have been like 5 different Doink the Clowns.

My point is, in the UFC, Zuffa aren't creating these characters. They aren't giving them gimmicks or creating names for them. They aren't writing the theme music for the fighters entrances. These are real people, with no gimmicks. Some of them have nicknames, but they aren't created by Zuffa. Jon Fitch is a real person. He doesn't have a ******* gimmick. He isn't playing a character. This is real. And for Dana to want him to sign over his likeness rights or be fired is ******* retarded. Like Fitch said, why not 5-10 years? He wouldn't have a problem with that. Fitch signs this, he'll never be able to be a part of ANY other MMA video game, as well as a number of other things promotional wise. And that's pretty ****** considering that UFC can CUT YOU IF YOU LOSE ONE FIGHT!! You can't win a ******* fight and say since you won you think you ought to be able to leave. It's ********. Fitch said there's another game manufacturer that has another MMA game in the works, and that's why Dana is all gunho about getting all of these things signed by everyone as soon as possible.

Vince, it's smart for him to do things like this. He owns a business that creates characters, and he invests millions of dollars in doing just that. He's protecting his investment. But the UFC on the other hand, they aren't CREATING ****.

I've written enough.

Well lets do this

Pros

the pros of giving your rights to the UFC for likeness and character to use in video games are:

1) it preserves your image in the UFC: if people can still play you in video games when youre not in the company anymore, it still keeps you relevant.
2) you can always be related to the UFC
3) if you retire, UFC can use you as a Legend in their games

Cons

1) you cant use your likeness anywhere else- in games, clothes, etc, without a lawsuit coming
2) if you do extremely well in Affliction, UFC is the only one that can produce your merchandise, and in effect, be shelved and have no products out
3) if you leave the company, you get no royalties or monetary gains from the merchandise should they produce it
4) sponsorships are lost due to potential conflicts with UFC and production rights

...these are a few of the pros/cons that can be attributed to signing over likenesses and such.

And I agree with you on the WWE Sam

You also have to look at it like this.

What if Tito had signed over his likeness rights? You think Dana's going to do jack **** with him after he leaves? No. He's just going to be buried in the archives and never used again in my opinion.

You sign over your rights, then you piss the wrong person off, you are then buried forever.

Which is why Fedor will never go to the UFC unless some kind of special contract is created for him. He is a very smart man.

There is also a clause that states for example, if you sign a three fight deal and are undefeated, you must fight more fights. It is smart business wise, but complete garbage for the fighters.

They just had the UFC 94 Press conference in Totonto with Penn and GSP.

It was pretty interesting when Penn asked Dana if the winner of the Lesnar vs Mir/Nog fight would be the number 1 fighter in the world. He said he wanted to get Fedor in there to figure it out.

Hopefully one of these days if Dana DOES really want to get Fedor, he'll meet him somewhere in the middle.

Somewhere around 4 minutes into it.
