Went to the shop tonight to pick up my Christmas gift and while I was there, in walked a young fella who was looking for hockey cards. The shop has some packs on the shelf but no singles. While talking to the guy, I realized he was just getting into hockey cards and collecting. He's from Pennsylvania and is a Pens and Canes fan. We spent about an hour and a half talking and chatting about cards and the like.

He ended up buying some supplies and a Hockey Beckett and I decided to help start his collection off. I had an opened box of UD Ice in the truck and also a Martin Brodeur dual frozen Fabrics jersey card. I gave it to him free of charge and even showed him how to properly store cards. He was very excited and I've probably made a good friend out of the whole deal. We exchanged emails and had a really good time chatting.

It was refreshing to see someone starting out the right way. He wanted to learn how to secure his cards and protect them and he was excited with getting base cards, yes I said base cards. I am also going to get him a few sets I have duplicates of for his new collection. In a world of high end cards, auto's and game used cards, its nice to see someone appreciate the small stuff. It was a fun night to say the least. It was a nice way to spread some Christmas cheer in an otherwise crappy last few months for me.

Sorry for the long read.

I have a dirty little secret:

I still love base cards.

But then again, I could care less about value. How else do you explain my big long term goal being a Jay Dahl autograph? :D

Great story. It's rare to hear card store stories that don't involve someone getting ripped off.

I'm all about base cards also. I think get excited when I see a card that isn't numbered more than one that is...unless it's from the '90s. Great story and it's great to see people helping out.

With the loss of so many card shops in the last 5-10 years, it's refreshing to hear a story like this. We really need to help out the younger up-start collectors like this, because they don't have as many options like we did when we were younger. All they have is people trying to make money off them online... we had the card shops were a lot of good people could have one-on-one interaction with young collectors to "show them the ropes". This type of thing should be done more often at shows as well... if you notice a young collector just starting out, tell them a few tips and maybe help them get a collection started like Brian did here. Great job Brian, post thanked...

It was nice to be able to pass knowledge and know how that some of you have given me over the years along to someone new. He even stated that he could probably buy wax cheaper on the net but he likes coming to the shops to look around and also to help the local guys. I thought, "Is this guy human?" LOL THanks for the kind thoughts fellas. I really enjoyed helping out. I may not do much in a years time, but when I do, I go all out and this made a bright spot in my holiday season.

Great story.

I remember when I first got back into collecting in 2006 and I was asking a friend at work about who I should collect.I knew Griffey and A-rod and the stars and stuff but I would pull stuff out of packs and not even know who the guy is.He suggested that I watch more baseball before I got rid of anything.Decide who I liked. He said that there will always be players you enjoy watching and collecting that may not be a superstar but they are just as good to collect. Now after a couple of years in it...I couldn't agree more.I think its good to have interaction and watch and talk about sports.I think you can get into it more and have more fun when you know who the players are your pulling from packs. And its even cooler when you pull a card of a guy that you don't see many cards of but you collect him anyway. Those are what is really worth busting for me.

I like base too.But I guess that makes me old school?
