Did anyone actually read the article?

Some of your answers say otherwise.

The coach didn't even play ALL of his starters and most of the game had his 2nd and 3rd string guys in.

I agree with the majority here, let them play.

And, unlike the idiot parents who were mad that their "star" players didn't play more, I wouldn't have started all my starters either. It was the DEFENDING state champ versus a very bad team.

Parents really surprise me sometimes.

I actually went to the losing high school. Our football team was terrible the whole time I was there. I remember losing games 60-3 my senior year. I think they won four games my freshman year, and then a combined four games the following three. Estero used to be a powerhouse. In the past 10 years two new high schools opened that drew kids from Estero, and they just don't have a big talent pool anymore. Surprisingly we have two NFL starters though, Matt Prater and Anthony Henry. Estero has always been more of a baseball school.

When I was a kid, in recreational soccer, we were leading a team 15-0 at half time. Our coach instructed us to let some score 5 times in the second half; at that time, we were all 10-12 years old and obviously didn't make it a secret what we were doing. By the end of the game a parent from the other team went over and got in a fight with our coach. All in all a terrible experience.

the team i played for in college got beat 83-13. it happens, sometimes you run into that 800lb gorilla. it is part of life, do we really want to start teaching our kids that its ok to just give up when things arent going your way?? screw that, suck it up and finish the damn game.

I wouldn't want a coach teaching my child that "when the going gets tough...quit or at least don't try your hardest"! This is what these kids practice everyday for & (I hope) they should be playing this game to do just that, Play The Game (& have fun). When all the other aspects are brought into it is when it loses it's fun & becomes something else altogether. Obnoxious parents can stay home or be put in a sound proof seating section, they need to be informed that thier opinion & what they think needs to be done during gametime means squat. These kids are taught many life lesson's while participating in the game of football (or most any sport in general) & they need to learn that in football, just as in real life circumstances, there are times that you're outmatched, outmanned, & outscored & that those guy's on the field across from you aren't going to let up to spare your feelings (or mommy & daddy's feelings for that matter). This situation in itself would be a perfect learning situation that the player's on both sides of the ball could walk away from all the better for experiencing (it also could have solidified each team- just the knowing that your teammates have your back under extreme odds can bring a team together as a unit). I could go on but I've written 20 pgs already

Texas A&M was beat 77-0 by Oklahoma a few years back... As an A&M fan it was a very dark day...

The score could have easily been 100-0 had stoops not put in the 3rd and 4th stringers... So, i think backups should always be put in to avoid completely embarrassing the other team...

I'm not sure if it would be more embarassing losing 100-0 against the 1st teamer's or being held to a score of 0 by 3rd & 4th stringer's (I'd rather get beat by 1st stringer's anyday 100-0 than be taken pity on by another team & still get shut-out  )?

Put in all my backups and keep trying to score.

This is the way to go.

I've been a high school girls basketball coach for 7 years now and have been on both ends of lopsided wins. We've lost games by 40 points where starters for the other team played the entire game and coaches called timeouts in the final minutes because they were upset at their team (can think of 3 schools off the top of my head that did this).

There was one game we played against a powerhouse (the AD scheduled the game cause he was Catholic and wanted to play a Catholic school) that had 5 future D1 recruits (including one to Tennessee) and whose PG was bigger than our C. They were up 10-0 after 30 seconds and I have no doubt they could've won 300-0 if they wanted. But their coach stopped the press and played the starters about 10 minutes and couldn't help the fact that his bench was far better than our team. They won 109-36 and I have nothing but the utmost respect for that coach.

Every time this happens people want to come up with a magic number, but the fact is, you can't see the sportsmanship in the final score. 'Victory with Honor' is the hardest thing to teach, but if you have it, there is no such thing as running up the score.

Wisconsin's mercy rule is a running clock after a 40-some point margin. My '97 HS team had it enacted in one of their wins my junior year.

At that point, it ain't about the kids on the field, it's about everyone getting home at a decent hour :)
