Hey guys-
I'm going to keep this pretty short - the past few days have just been absolutely bonkers for me. The National came at a perfect time. I've never been able to go to one, and this one just happened to be about a mile from my house, and also just happened to be occurring on 4 of the very few days this month when I even would have been able to go.
I got some really nice cards. It seems like I made my best pickups after I had said goodbye to everyone and was "walking out the door." That 500-foot walk usually took at least an hour and I had no idea how I could keep missing these things the first 3 times around! I have 3 huge stacks of stuff on my desk to scan, and it will probably take me the better part of a week to get them all knocked out, so I'll just update as I can.
Without a doubt, the highlight of the show for me was just getting to meet some of the guys who make FCB possible. Not just talking about the staff - having that many members in one place at one time was great. It was probably the first time in my life that "internet life" and "real life" intersected in such a major way. It would be like someone knocking on your front door, delivering a card that you won on ebay by hand, and saying to your face "Fast Payment, A Plus!!!!!!!" and then walking away. I always understood that each one of these little icons represented an actual person, but it's just really neat to put an actual face to an actual name, instead of an avatar to a screen name. Thanks to everyone who helped set up - the FCB booth will hopefully bring in a few new members to the site. I didn't realize that 2 of the girls at the booth were the ladies from A Cardboard Problem. I just assumed that all the females were wives/girlfriends, so totally my mistake.
It was great meeting Dirk too - I told him that I had never gotten an IP autograph from anyone, which in hindsight was a lie. I got Steve Lombardozzi at the Rangers ballpark when I was 8, but this is the first IP auto I've gotten since I started collecting again in 2003, so that counts in my book. I'm about halfway through his book now and really enjoying it. I was able to take Mrs. mudflap to the show on Saturday for about an hour, and she was definitely a good sport about it. Dirk told her that she looked like a soft Gwyneth Paltrow. I'm not really sure what he meant but I think he would probably beat me up in a fight so I (and hopefully she) took it as a compliment.
Once again, great to meet all the FCB'ers. I'm not going to name names, but you all know who you are. Scans to follow at random intervals, and hope everyone enjoyed their time in the Charm City.
