1997 Flair Showcase Legacy Collection Row 0 #31 Mike Piazza
1997-99 Flair Showcase Masterpieces
1998 Flair Showcase Perfect 10 #4 Mike Piazza
1999 Fleer Brilliants 24-Karat Golds - I recently picked up the Piazza from a board member.

Hi, I know this is a pretty old thread, but I just joined this forum & am interested in discussing the '98 Showcase Perfect 10 set.
I actually have the Piazza...picked it in a pack wayyyyy back in the day...

I didn't go back and check if I answered already, but 1/1s have really lost their edge for me. Too many being made of each player now. They are no longer special at all, just a new way to create scarcity for just about any card. When you realize that you can't get all of the cards of your favorite player and even if you inch closer with the victory of plucking off a few 1/1s few and far between, 70 more will be released over the next year+ for the better/more popular players.

I have always preferred oddball cards to the mainstream, simply because everyone can (and often will) chase after the marquee rookie or HOF/star Topps cards issued each year, but fewer people can or will go after regional sets, food issues, newspaper inserts or other special items that are not nationally distributed or made in anywhere near the quantity of the annual Topps cards.

This is perhaps a technicality of an answer, but—given how few non-1/1 Gomes cards I'm missing—I value them more highly than pretty much any of his 1/1s. To be sure, there are some 1/1s I'd love to have, such as the remaining letters from his nameplate in 2007 Topps Sterling. But were push to yield to shove, I'd probably take most of the below:
  • 2002 Just Prospects Prototypes #JPP17 (might not exist)
  • 2004 Skybox Autographics Prospects Endorsed Dual Jonny Gomes/Andruw Jones (probably never produced, looking for a redemption card)
  • 2005 Upper Deck Platinum #412 /5
  • 2006 Bowman Originals 2004 Bowman Chrome Refractors /2
  • 2007 Fleer Ultra Autographics (probably doesn't exist)
  • 2014 Topps Acetate #146 /10
  • 2014 Topps Heritage Black Back #135 (WS Game 4)
  • 2014 Topps Heritage Black Back #274
  • 2015 Topps Heritage Blue Back #572

Topps Archives and Leaf (Panini also in general to an extent) have kinda ruined the 1/1 market. As others have said, they aren't really that special anymore, as there are 1/1's all over the place. Leaf specifically has made a mess of things with all the products they keep releasing, all "limited edition" and single digit print runs. I collect Cecil Fielder cards, but I've narrowed my collection to 1986 - 1999 only. The more rare cards during his playing years are more difficult to find than his 1/1's from more recent years. I would pay more for those older rare cards, like the 1996 Select Certified Mirror Red/Blue/Gold cards or the 1998 Circa Thunder Super Rave card.

Yup. Watching people pay stupid money for 1/1 Clemens stuff made after 2008, various rehashed superfractors every year, rehashed dynasty, gazillions of new nonsense sets in 28 different colors of the same picture. And thats just Topps!

I consider Leaf and Panini to literally be parody cards post 2008. I wont even buy them or trade for them. I could inflate my unique count to well over 5k, if not 6k if I grabbed all the awful and overproduced Leaf and Paninis since Clemens retired. But why? They are mostly ugly and boring.

As far as 1/1s I will only chase playing days ones, after that its a joke. I have a handful of Topps Archives autos, but they need to be well below the price of a Clemens foundation auto ($100). He signs too much to pay more snd i have over 150 of his autos. How many more could i need lol?

As far as OP idea, to me Jersey Number serialized stuff is all worth more than many modern 1/1s, and is where I focus now.

I am not on the 90s train about overpaying for things like 24K, red crusades, PMGs and Rubies, etc. I believe theyve been overhyped by sellers playing the buyer egos to sell long holds from those days.social media haa allowed them to create pruce structures which are nonsensical.Prices make no sense as a player collector. Jersey number things are way more rare and cooler for a player collection to me. 90s and 2000s insert cards are great, and I have many, but not at retail mark prices.

Also, any of my in person and inscribed autographed cards or items trump those cards and most 1/1s. Playing days 1/1s trump the hyped 90s 2000s "grail" inserts for demand in this collection. Just one mans opinion, of course.

As an example.... heres a M&M "1/1" I offered on. I only offer on Sox Jersey ones, not his other teams. I was ok to be in it at 40 all in, this counter is more than I value it at, so I am passing. I ve bought plenty of jersey #d playing days autos or patches for this price, which are way cooler than the M&M series 1/1s to me, which are hardly rare.

Being a collector over the years, I've got a few 1/1s of many of my PC guys. When non collectors ask me what is one of my rarest cards, I always show them this one...it's still rare being only 6 of them. But any HOF game used collector will also understand that Musial has extremely limited button cards:

Not to cast shade on your card, but I just hope that these items are real. I didn't go crazy with GU, outside of Garvey. I do have (2) 3 row boxes full (it toploaders, no Garvey), so that sounds less convincing when I say that out loud, but most were picked up pretty cheaply. I have a few higher end cards and would be quite a bit disappointed to find out they were swatches/buttons off some value village donations!

Many of the larger ticket game used items were very transparently purchased at auction by the companies back through the mid 2000s. Not too sure after Panini entered the mix.

Very nice. Stan was, in fact, the man.

Tops is just as guilty now by manufacturing their own relics (well, they did up through 2023). I think they stopped after that finally, but I digress.
