SIGN-UP OFFICIALLY OVER. THANK YOU!
TOTAL MEMBERS FOR 2009 GROUP SO FAR: 23 (list below)
(IMPORTANT: with 20 total members, each will only send 3 packages in the year and not 6 as written below. If we hit 25 members, the number goes up to 4 in the year. etc etc etc.)
Hello FCB members!
Here it is, the official 2009 Birthday Group sign-up thread.
This will be the 4th year I do do this (started over at the BMB) and each year it keeps getting better and better.
How it works:
I create a group of members who send to each other for their birthdays; cards which they need/want or other relative items for collections and we all share scans and pics.
The number of packages you send depends on the number of members in the group. You never send during your B-day month but send several times during the year. Who you send to is determined by drawing names out of a hat (once sign-up is closed). Each year I have my fiancée draw the names... not necessarily an innocent hand but since she doesn't know any of you, it's not fixed in advance.
EXAMPLE: this year (2008 Group) each member sent to 7 other members during the year. In return, each member received 7 packages.
TRUE: some members send more, some get ripped a package or two (which I do my best to avoid) and some members drop out in the middle of the year. Thanks to the generosity of some members, some (but not all) packages are replaced.
THIS YEAR:
EACH MEMBER WHO JOINS ENGAGES TO SEND AT LEAST 6 PACKAGES. (this means you will receive 6 packages). I am going to limit the number to 6: 1 package every 2 months. This also means I'm going to limit the number of members.
I will limit the number of members per month according to the total amount of members.
EXAMPLE: if 36 members sign up, a maximum of 5 members in a month to ensure that there are enough members to send the packages. WHY? Imagine having 6 members in January (total of 36 packages)... only 30 people send (since you don't send during your B-day month)... 6 packages would be missing. If there are 5, there are 31 possible senders which covers the total amount of packages needed.
If 42 members sign up, I can push it to 6 max in a month. (for any given month).
(This may sound confusing but I guarantee it works out when you do the math).
The packages
I am not asking you to send a 1/1 auto or plate or $100 worth of cards... I'm sure only few people could do such a thing 6 times in a year.
Each member will give a list of what they collect or want (which can change during the year of course).
Just stay as close as you can to the need/want list and send what you want. Try to avoid the mass pile of base cards of course, but take a look at the 2008 group.. we have auto cards, patches, jerseys, refractors, a bit of a mix and it's just what people can send. Remember, you will receive 6 packages containing cards you want/need for your collection.
DC is not necessary but I do keep track of things from the scans that are shown on the boards and the "Thank you" notes left on the boards as well.
SCANS ARE GREAT because it's easy to keep track BUT also a nice way to acknowledge the fact that you received something... perfect to say "thank you". Keep in mind "thank you" is not optional. It only takes 5 minutes to say thank you. (even less).
How to sign up:
I need you to send me your name and address as well as a need/want list via EMAIL ONLY. ([email protected]) I also need your birth date and username. If any info is missing, I will disregard your request.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND I DO NOT SHARE YOUR EMAIL EVEN WITH OTHER MEMBERS. All my messages are sent on the boards or your emails are hidden from others when I do send messages. I do share your addresses for obvious reasons.
You have until Wednesday the 17th of December to sign up. After that, I need time to organize things and get the spread sheet ready to send out for the January birthdays and of course send out names of whom you must send to. (January packages tend to arrive a bit later than the rest for this reason).
I will keep an updated list just below so you know who is signed up.
During this time you will also see the current 2008 B-Day threads (November and December). Please feel free to check them out.
If you have any questions or suggestions, I'm all ears and eyes.
I hope to have you in the group.
1 last and important thing: if you sing up, I STRONGLY suggest you remain active. Don't ruin things by cheating. This is meant to be fun and make people feel nice for their b-days. Don't expect high end cards either. It RARELY happens. There are generous members out there but if you take them for granted, they disappear faster than it takes me to type these few words.
See you all soon!
Dominique
