Finally found the article I remember from almost 40(!) years ago. Man, SI's website sucks.

Anyway, Rose is quoted in the article as saying,"...if he were a pitcher, 'I'd try to get every edge I could,'" in reference to Rick Honeycutt getting caught doctoring a ball. He also said he used a corked bat in BP but never in a game. Given his history of denying things that he later admitted, I don't know what to believe. Also, the article is from 1981 and the link in the OP is talking about a timeframe a couple years later.
