At the end of the season, as per MLBtraderumors.com. Here's the article:

Phillies Have Considered Releasing Ryan Howard After Season
By Jeff Todd [July 23, 2014 at 6:23pm CDT]
As his struggles worsen, the Phillies have had internal discussions about releasing one-time star first baseman Ryan Howard after the season, reports Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. Howard is owed the rest of his $25MM salary this season and comes with $60MM in future guarantees.

It does not appear that the club has reached any finality in regards to Howard’s future. The possibility of a trade has been explored, but Philadelphia has not found another club interested in taking on any substantial part of Howard’s contract. That is not surprising, of course, given that the 34-year-old is slashing a career-low .224/.305/.377 through 417 plate appearances on the year.

Now, with Howard’s decline becoming more pronounced, Philadelphia appears set to give more playing time to younger first base option Darin Ruf, who was recalled today. Manager Ryne Sandberg did not call it a platoon situation, but suggested as much. “As far as the lineup, that will be a day-to-day thing,” he said. “I think it’s important to see what a guy like Darin Ruf can do also going forward,” the skipper added.

Howard signed his extension at the start of the 2010 season, coming off of a four-year run in which he put up a composite .278/.379/.589 line and hit 198 home runs. Though he continued to produce at an above-average clip at the plate for two more seasons, things began to head south when he tore his Achilles tendon while making the last out of the team’s Game 5 loss in the 2011 NLDS. (That, of course, was also the Phils’ most recent postseason game.) Since that time, Howard — long considered a substandard fielder and baserunner – has mustered only 917 trips to the plate and owns an OPS that falls below league average.

Thoughts?

I want complete turnover for the Phillies, starting at the top. Amaro, Howard, Lee, Hamels, Bastardo, Jimmy Jack, Utley and anything they can get solid prospects for. It's gonna be a struggle for the Fightin's for a the next 5 years, at least.

Was a terrible contract at the time and was a head-scratcher as well as I felt it wasn't necessary.

Add to that, ; that injury was the death knell for a power guy like Howard.

Phillies are seriously phucked for a long time thanks to Ruin Tomorrow.

Why yes I was. And I even said what the hell Ryan Howard did not even run that out. Until we seen he was laying face down about 10 ft from home plate. And wonder what the hell just happened. And love how the Philly fans where booing the cards and not even really to concerned about their best player was laying in a heap of flub on the field and then even some what cheered and booed at the same time.

The Phillies need to part ways with Howard, and man it will suck to eat most of the money owed to him, but has to be done just like other times have taken it on the chin when the sign players to these kinds of contracts and then they don't seem to work out.

Cutting him is idiotic, when they can flip him to an AL squad if they are willing to eat 3/4 of his salary.

Nobody is going to want him unless they take basically all of his salary. Even at 3/4 they wouldn't find takers. They'd need to take all of it to even have a team consider giving up anything for him. He's no good anymore no matter where he goes.

The Yanks should take him, he'd fit in perfectly.

I mean, he's "old", he always is hurt, he doesn't provide enough offense, plays first and is greatly over paid.....I'm talking about Howard, not Teixeira in case anyone got confused.

MLBTR posted an update:

TODAY: Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has some additional details on Philadelphia’s efforts to deal Howard. The club has shopped him, indicating that it would eat “much or most” of his remaining salary. Rival executives say that Philly is working hard to line up a match.

As Heyman notes, an American League team would seem most likely to add the former MVP, and two GMs told him yesterday that Howard was probably worth between $3MM and $5MM annually at this point. (Though presumably that does not mean that a multi-year commitment at that price would be desirable.)

Maybe Howard said the hell with it because he got sick of hitting solo home runs to the opposite field. He still leads the Phillies in RBI's. Isn't that what you pay a
clean up hitter to do? He has been on a huge slump the past two weeks, but why single him out? Plenty of other guys doing even less...Dom Brown, Rollins.....is
Darrin Ruf and his .100 batting average really a better choice? Sandburg is over his head but nobody has the guts to say it cause he was a great guy and a great
player blah blah blah. You can't blame the Phillies record this season just on Howard. He carried the team during a nice winning streak this season. When he cooled
off no one was there to pick up the slack, not even Utley. You want this guy on base running...stealing bases trying to score runs???? No we pay other guys for that.

and why do you all wet your pants and cry like babies and quote his 25 million dollar salary? It ain't your freaking money. He has had "his worse season ever" and is still
in the top 5 in RBI's for all National League hitters. I guess when you dominate for years you get lots of idiots who love to see you decline. I hope he finds another team that
will appreciate him.

I agree that he still has value , and an AL team is a perfect fit. He does (from a teams perspective) needs to improve that average , but there is still production there. Just not enough for the Phils to justify $25m if they want to move forward. As a DH he still could add a threat, and at $3-5m a year I think a contender in need of some upgrade at DH should take it it'll available
