Not really, Miami can take him and his bad knees and ankles. At this point I'd much rather have Jason Terry coming off the bench behind Avery Bradley. He can create more scoring, spread the floor, and he's a better defender. Ray can run his cuts and end arounds and shoot, but he couldn't even give you that in the playoffs. He's done.
Ray was a strange player. When he was on, he was the best shooter in the league. The problem was, it seemed as he got deeper in the playoffs he was off more than he was on. Remember when the C's lost to the Lakers in the finals? He had that historic game shooting threes, and then followed it up with a 2 for 16 from the floor or something terrible like that. I think he was having issues accepting his decline and his new role with the team. I wish he would have signed with OKC or anyone but the Heat or Lakers so I still would've like him.
Wow, this article really made Ray seem like a baby. If any of this is true, and he really thinks he built up enough good will in Boston for fans not to turn on him then he's crazy.
"Allen hated that Rivers didn’t give him his starting job back after he returned from a late-season ankle injury"
-The team played better without him, and Bradley emerged as the better player for this team. Earn your playing time, and don't XXXXX when a young kid outplays you're failing 37 year old body
"...hated that it always felt like he was the Celtics star made to sacrifice above the rest."
-Again, earn the respect. KG and Pierce are better players and more critical to the team.
""When it comes to basketball, Rondo is the smartest player on the team – one of the smartest players in the league," one locker-room source said. "And Ray considers himself a smart guy. But at some point, it became hard for Ray to be corrected by a guy so much younger than him.""
-Wow
"Some believe it was pure jealousy on Allen's part, too, that he had blame for the disconnect. Within the Big Three, they teased Allen for his political nature. Whereas Rondo, Pierce and Garnett would speak in brutal, honest terms, Allen was forever measured, even. He was a military child, a relentless worker, a player who found great comfort in the daily routine of his shooting and conditioning. Yet eventually Rondo’s greatness expanded the Big Three to the Big Four, and Allen’s next contracts with the Celtics were paid on a different scale than Rondo, Garnett and Pierce."
-On one hand, I get it. Allen likes to play the part of the elder statesman, and maybe he felt like an outcast. On the other hand, does he really feel that he'll connect with LeBron James and Dwayne Wade more than Pierce and KG? Also, if he was upset about the lack of "respect" meaning being paid less why did he take less from Miami. He deserved less money than Pierce, Garnett and Rondo, but to me if that's true then the move of taking less money in Miami screams that he's sticking it to the Celtics.
Bottom line, sad to see him go. Would have loved to see this team come back with the new pieces, but at the end of the day Ray is 37 coming off another round of ankle surgeries and was a 6th man at best on this team. If I know one thing about Rondo, he steps up the most when the pressure is on or when he feels slighted. Can't wait to see him torch Ray when the Celtics and Miami play. That will let Ray know why he didn't get Rondo money.
Also, my opinion on how he should be received when returning to Boston:
First time being announced in the starting lineups he should get a standing ovation. After that he should be booed every time he touches the ball. Best way to say thanks, but just like you didn't feel any loyalty to the Celtics and their fans, they don't need to feel any love now that you're just another player on the enemy team.
