Reviving a 20+ Year Old Player Collection...UPDATE 1/20

On the 4th of July last year, my wife, daughter, and I were at my parent's house for a cookout. Just before leaving, our daughter discovered my stash of cards I had as a kid (mostly '86-'93 issues.) I noticed one box that was taped shut and marked "E.B. ." Inside was a collection I completely forgot about......my Ellis Burks player collection. At the time, Burks was my favorite Sox player (he still is, as-far-as post WWII players go.) After sorting through quite a few doubles and triples, I managed to find 42 unique cards. I brought them home that night and set them aside. As the summer wore on, I picked up a few key singles (Topps and Bowman Tiffany, Desert Shield, etc.) here and there for the fun of it. That led to buying a few lots....more singles.....a couple of HR ticket stubs.... a large lot....and so on.

So now I've decided to go all in with what this collection would have been - Red Sox only. I came up with a checklist of 204 Burks cards/items featuring him in a Sox uniform. Combining the old stash and newer pickups, I'm currently sitting at 93/204 (45.6%.) I have one item incoming that I'm very excited about (I can honestly say I've never anticipated a mailday like this before.)

It's nice that it's only 204 cards you have to worry about....instead of 7,000 or so haha. That seems a lot more attainable and none of the cards should cost much at all (I would assume). Should be a fun little player collection even though you have 'The Monster' to worry about.

Sounds like fun. Back in the day I had Ellis Burks and Sam Horn as two of my most promising prospects. I still have a box somewhere with a ton of their rookie cards.

I use Beckett's site. You need to create a free account, then you can enter a players name and filter the results by team (or any filter(s) you choose.) This should produce a relatively accurate checklist. Beckett listed 197 Ellis Burks Red Sox cards, I found 7 more through my own research. Some of the more obscure sets (i.e. food and other promotional type cards) may or may not be listed.

Thanks, Scott. The card count is nice, and the cost isn't too bad, either. It's nice to have a collection that doesn't stare back at you like the Monster does.

I was always one to stick up for Manny's "being Manny" moments. When he blatantly stood by and watched three straight strikes cross the plate, followed by physically assaulting the Sox 60+ year old traveling secretary, I couldn't excuse his actions. I sold off the entire collection.

Nice, I'm in a similar boat as you. I recently dusted off my Ripken childhood collection and would like to add some cards to it myself. I'm not setting lofty goals of collecting them all or even the majority of them, just want to take it slow and and go one at a time. I think I'll be more concerned with PSA 10s of his early years rather than these crazy $1k or $2k auto cards / memorabilia cards. I'd rather the have actual signed jerseys or bats that can be obtained for a mere fraction of the price!

Does anyone know what's up with the "D.P" inscription? I'm hoping the answer can help me narrow the date down a bit more.
