what the hell is wrong with this country. maybe "st. georges" has never heard the story of david vs goliath... or cinderella... or lord of the rings. its the effort and heart that come out in games like this that give the kids pride, character and confidence moving forward. why have a football team if you are going to instill fear on the administration level? you might as well use the field for band, flags, and male cheerleader practice.

That's sad. Everything is so pussified now it's ridiculous. I'm sure those kids would have rather taken a beating on the field instead of a beating to their pride for backing out.

Why is the other team even playing games, if they ***** out against bigger teams ?

Let's say, if one of those players on the team that forefitted goes to Northeastern and the team that had the big linemen goes to Oxford, and they both apply for the same job, will the one from Northeastern pull his application, because Oxford is seen as a top top tier college ? Seems like the wrong message to send.

I went to an ISL school and played against both of those teams. Lawrence and St. Mark's both should be in a different league. St Mark's basketball puts multiple kids in D1 every year, and one of their current players is top 5 in his class (Alex Murphy is his name). Both school's athletic programs are so far ahead of the rest of the league it's absurd. They recruit all over the place, whereas most other ISL schools (like the one I went to), are more focused on academics. Having seen both Lawrence and St Georges play a lot in HS somewhat recently (I graduated in 07), I can see why this happened.
That said, I would never back out of a game. Get crushed for the first 2 drives, and Lawrence will put all their backups in. St George's will obviously get smoked, but the 300 pounders would be out of the game early anyway.

I'm trying to think of something......some rationalization beyond calling them babies.....but I don't think I can.....

That's pretty lame.
And granted if I played for them I probably wouldn't enjoy going out and getting destroyed........but I'd be pissed if you told me I couldn't play. Plus if it's that big a mismatch (let's not kid ourselves and pretend they'd win) it becomes about small victories......sometimes there's a certain pride to say you went toe-to-toe against D1 type kids, even if they beat you 9/10 plays. You have that one play you can say you were better. Or maybe one kid gets a TD, even a catch or first down....sometimes something as simple as a 10 yd. run can mean more than a TD if you're doing it against the perceived "best".

Otherwise, as someone said - why play football? Injuries can happen anytime. Less talented kids can hurt you just easily.....there may even be a greater chance. Like I said lame.
I think this is just the beginning though - with all the concussion studies and increasing injuries - more and more parents are going to be veering their children away from the sport.

Absolutely pathetic.

At the very minimum, show up for the game with a revised playbook that's centered on not getting anyone hurt. As another poster said, they'll clearly pull their best players once they are up 21-0. And then you hope for a garbage touchdown or field goal towards the end to avoid being held scoreless.

There's MUCH more dignity in going out on the field and taking the loss rather than refusing to play the game.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My junior year of high school, out crappy program had to play a top 10 ranked team. We knew we were going to get killed, and we did as 5 different players got concussions but we also did something no other team had done, or did to them...we scored a touchdown in the first half. The final score was 60-6 but we were pumped about scoring on their first team defense.

Did they block the extra point or did you go for 2 and miss?
