If Gary Sheffield finally gets his 500th Home Run and who knows plays long enough to get the 3,000 hits he so badly desires, what team hat would he go into the Hall of Fame wearing?

I have to think Sheffield is probably the best hitter/player to ever play without a definitive team identity. He had great years with almost every team he played for, but when I think of Gary Sheffield, he for some reason has no team logo on his hat.

He nearly hit for the Triple Crown with the Padres, won a World Series with the Marlins, finished second in MVP voting with the Yankees. But, he has never "fit" with one team since 1988. And oddly enough, the Marlins, the team he played for the longest saw some of his most mediocre seasons. Other than 2006 where he hit 42 HRs and 120 RBIs, the Marlin years were "down" seasons for Sheff.

What team should he (should he make it) go into the HOF wearing? Please Explain your choice.

He's not making it. He is tainted by PEDs and his relationship with Bonds/BALCO, and he is widely thought of as an ass. He is not a great enough player to overcome those two negatives in the eyes of the BBWAA.

I'd guess the Marlins, most time and a WS. Wouldn't surprise me to see him with no hat though.

If he makes it then Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Sosa, Bonds and Palmeiro make it.

From your post to God's ear, Craig. You can also include disrespecting the game by jaking it to try to force the Brewers to trade him in the first place. Karma's a beyotch.

I feel Bonds and Clemens will make the HOF regardless of whether McGwire, Sosa, Palmeiro and Sheffield make it. I would not lump them all together.

I think if you take the name out of it and look at the stats. That player would get in. Not right away, but eventually. But the problem is with his "involvement" in PED's and perceived attitude. That will make it a tough road to the Hall.

I would like to see him in a Marlins hat though. Not a fan, but they need some love in the Hall eventually. ;)

I just can't see him making it. He's got big career numbers, but his biggest number may be the 7 teams (soon to be 8) that he has played for. Gaylord Perry also played for 8 teams, but he wasn't known as a problem player, and played his first 10 years for the Giants. Sheffield never played for one team very long.

Character is a voting point for HOF voters. Sheffield doesn't get that point, and I think will cause him to fall short of induction.

Nope, I don't think Sheffield makes it, even if he signs with someone to get #500.

Regardless, in our fantasy world what logo should he wear?

How about a radiation symbol? Clearly he was thought of as a cancer.

None, he juiced...and is an @rse so at the minimum I can only hope he has to wait until his last ballot to get in.

... he sure as heck won't be wearing a Brewer Cap we know that...and I wouldn't want him to

He will get in. Guy will still player another couple years. End up in the 550 total home run area and close to 3,000 hits. He will be one of those HOF types that after 10-12 years on the ballot will sneak in. My guess the class of 2014.

Sheffield, and all these players listed will make it someday. They are just going to have to wait a bit.

Whichever steroids-tainted player gets in first (I believe it to be Bonds), the flood gates will open and the other steroid users will flow in....just like the good, not great, players are flowing in now...

I do not feel he is a Hall Of Fame player. He is a perfect example of some of the new wave of HOF eligible players we will continue to see in our lifetime. He was not the best player at his position for a given number of years. His "Body of work" was from 99 - 05. 500 HR will not be automatic in the next 20 years. McGwire is a example but sheffield is another great one. He did not have a hall of fame career. There are guys that will end their careers and not have 500 HR's that were better then Sheffield. Vlad Guerrero will most likely not hit 500. But he is a hall of famer. Sheff is not. And this is not even adding in the involvment with Balco. Sheffield is the model for a guy who will hit 500 HR's but did not have a hall of fame career.

have you watched him the last two years? there is no way he gets near 550 hr's or 3000 hits
