Im a bit of a slab head myself. SGC does have a great looking slab. Especially the pre war cards look amazing in SGC slabs. My favorite is BGS though. I like their holders, like the security they offer and i like the inner sleeve. Im not very high on PSA, especially all the trouble they have had in the last couple years of people opening their slabs, putting in a lesser card in and re-sealing it. Also PSA slabs are not water proof, something else i find important.

Eric, you turn this thread into a slab talk and showoff thread as i don't believe we have a thread to show off our slabbed Hockey cards :)

G, please feel free to share any slabs you like here.

That Mario is not mine, just something i have my eye on, and the scan is fantastic, which is what i wanted to show :)

as for BGS/BVG, PSA, and SGC i share the same feelings you do, but there is a difference we have.

i wouldnt pass on a PSA slab if the price is right, but wouldnt go out of my way to get one over the other two companies, except on the following...

i know that this may sound crazy, but i truly feel that BGS is PUNISHING submitters that sub cards that grade less then 8.5

The 8.0 and lower flips that BGS use are ATROCIOUS looking when placed next to SGC/PSA cards of the same grade

damnit......packs are $20 and those 8's go for $55ish

i KNOW its smarter to buy the slab, but self subbing a card you've pack pulled and have been its only owner is something that is cool beyond words imo.

i was thinking about this the other day. opening wax from the early to mid 80s, your eyes are the only ones to see the cards since they were sealed up at the factory all those years ago

I have most high end OPC rookies from
1980-1988 graded PSA 9.

I'm still looking for a Gretzky PSA 9. By that, I mean I'm looking for $4k so I can purchase a PSA 9

I've started picking up a few puck slabs. I never even knew Dave Hammer Schultz was with Pens for a couple seasons. Searched you tube and only found a couple fights with him as a pen. I love Michel Dion mask he is wearing. It was auctioned a few years ago with photomatches. I think it went for around 5k. ITG slabs are pretty cool.

Ray Bourque. At the time I was building the collection (2003-2004), the pop was 19. By comparison, Messier had a pop of nearly 100. They were selling for upwards of $600 at one point.

Certain other cards were a bitch. Especially '81's. Ciccarelli and Andy Moog rarely showed up. Coffey was pushing $200. A few '85's like Iafrate and Kevin Dineen were extremely tough.

My biggest regret was selling my 1979's. I had Howe, Hull, and Dryden. Those are impossible. I sold all three for $750.

My #1 want is a 1979 Barry Melrose. I'd probably pay $175 for it, and I'd probably get smoked by a few hundred bucks

i hear you. self subbing the pre-82 OPCs are nearly impossible

Beats me. My PSA membership lapsed when I got kicked off their message board in 2004.

Does Photobucket delete old accounts? I'm trying to find pics of my stuff. I'm pretty sure it's under the name "Goodriddance189" but I can't find a damn thing

Maybe it's just me but looking at those three slabs I like the look of the PSA slab the best. I know they're known for having problems the last few years with security issues and such but I still like the look of them.

Truthfully I've never been a big fan of the look of the BGS/BVG slabs. They just don't look that good to me. I like SGC and PSA.

SGC deserves more love. I find their slabs look the best, their grading the most consistent and accurate. Even though I am not big on grading I would give them the biggest props.

Not gonna put up an argument with you on that, i agree the BGS 8.0 and lower flips are butt ugly. The Silver and Gold labels look great, but it does suck if you are gonna grade older stuff or vintage with BGS and you know you are gonna get one of the ugly flips since the cards are gonna grade below 8.
