So is Beckett that desperate for business?

I got a call from a telemarketer saying "We saw you created an account with us several years ago and was wondering if you'd like to hear about our grading special today"

"Ma'am I don't grade cards and I haven't logged onto Beckett in several years"

"Yes but we offer a great packag..."

"I'm going to stop you right there and save us both some time, I'm not interested"

Just felt sleazy of Beckett to be calling random people that signed up on their website.

I got that call a few months ago. Very persistant and sketchy sounding. Kinda had a hard time believing it was actually them calling.

If you'll recall, Beckett WAS bought by a company (Apprise Media) whose whole business model was selling subscriptions to niche, business-oriented magazines of questionable value. Not content, subscriptions. Since that sale, Beckett ceased to be a company with any actual interest in the hobby, and became solely about boosting corporate revenues. Remember, leading up to that sale was about the time Beckett destroyed it's website with the hugely botched "upgrade" and laid off most of it's content-related employees. It's a miracle they've hung onto Chris Olds as long as they have.

I've been contacted a couple times by them but was told it was because I hadn't submitted recently....Glad all my info has changed since I signed up 7 years ago.

Yea, I talk to some of the people that work there and they told me that there is a group of telemarketers from the Phillipines employed by the current owner of the company who pound out hundreds of calls each day for multiple companies under the owner's investment umbrella.

It isn't so much that it is shady as much as it is annoying. BUT, that is what it has come to these days with every company fighting over every spare penny.

I can't help but remark on how sad the decline has been. Finding the BMB back in early 2005 got me back into the hobby.
It was great community for at least a few years. I journey over to the site every once in awhile, mostly to look up card descriptions.

That really isn't desperate, it's standard practice in the magazine industry.

They weren't selling magazines. They were asking me if I graded my cards and she was going to tell me about a special for grading cards.

The money is in grading, so that's where all marketing dollars should go.

They sacrificed the mag for grading...one is a growth industry with little overhead and the other is a dying industry.

Decent business sense.

actually slapping a high BGS grade on something and then selling it on ebay using their own account is where the money and interest of conflict is! ;)

Well, to be in the position to do that, you have to first win your own award for best grading card company every year (not implying the voting is rigged...just a clownish process).

Then price it.

Then sell it.
