Why would someone want to buy/use semi-rigid holders instead of normal top-loaders?
They are difficult to store; and not "safer"
Really - i'd like to know ...

I've often wondered the same thing. Isn't that what you're supposed to send cards in to get graded too? The only thing I can come up with why people use them is because you can get more for your money compared to toploaders.

From what I have read, a lot of people prefer them because the cards don't move around inside the holders. Once they are in, they are very secure.

I agree that storage seems difficult, but some collectors feel they offer better protection because they is no "play" in the holders which helps to further prevent card damage.

But sometimes i've realized i have to "cram or push" cards into these holders;
they don't have room to slide in, they need to be finagled in ...

I have wondered this myself. In regards to the grading aspect of things I think it has to do with the fact that the card does not move around as already mentioned. In addition, I send cards for grading in a large semi-holder. I know they take the card out of the holder but a person could get a good look at it in the semi. I still prefer the top loader.

I see them mostly used on vintage cards at shows. Not sure exactly why though. I know they are thinner than toploaders so storage and carting them around could be part of the issue. I see a lot of dealers use storage I'd never personally use for my own collection. But also, if you are selling items, paying for top dollar holders seems kid of pointless if you're hoping the item walks out the door. Cut costs where you can.

Good topic/question!!!

I have often wondered the same thing as well. Several years back i ordered a couple hundred of these things off of ebay as i heard so much about them and all the grading companies recommended that you send your submissions in these as well. Well ill tell you, i thought they were awful ::facepalm:: You literally had to "Stuff' your card into these things and i actually bent a card and it got creased because i was using so much pressure to get the card in there. I also found it very hard to get a card out of these things as well and wondered why the heck would the grading companies want u to send cards in these things, especially high dollar value cards?? I NEVER used these things for my cards again, after that initial few times trying them out. I couldn't imagine putting a valuable card in one of these holders. Id much rather use a penny sleeve, top loader and team bag!
