Going through my old Becket magazines, I came across a March 1998 issue that had Hideo Nomo on the cover. Being curious about prices, I checked out 1996 Leaf Signature Series. I was only 17 at the time and I believe prices were $10/pack at my LCS (maybe $15, I can't really remember). Anyhow, I never pulled anything worth selling/trading but I was on the hunt for a Mariano Rivera.

So, getting back to the magazine. I look up the Rivera and at that time, his auto was valued at $12.

$12!!

I never pulled that card and at that time but I know I would've paid at least $50 for the card, just because I wanted it.

Sigh. I know I can't be the only one that missed out on a card or two like this.

How about a Troy Glaus from Rookies and Stars. I remember pulling that one which was a big one at the time. I actually had it graded as part of my freebies from my PSA collectors club subscription. I remember getting an 8 which still got me 80 bucks on eBay at the time. True Blues from that set were sweet as well. I know everyone wishes they could go back and scoop up all kinds of good stuff cheap but we thought these other guys would be HOF as well. Nobody knows. I know I got some JD Drew’s sitting in cardsavers somewhere. My time to sell passed 22-23 years ago but I’m a collector and still enjoy looking at them because of the memories they bring.

No way, I'd go back to 1994 and get some of those incredibly rare and staggeringly valuable Collector's Choice errors.

Go back further to the late 80s to pick up those even more valuable Donruss errors missing the dot after INC.

Nah, I'd go back to 1997 and bust open cases of Fleer & Ultra to pull rookies of that David Arias guy. And keep some of those cool looking inserts, too.

You could either go backwards in time to ninja dickpunch Billy Mastro before he goes to "trim city"

...but my choice would be the "time forward machine" to gather intel on prices and buy the good products before they exist yet! and when you get to the future (your present) it would all be out of stock!!

Funny story: he's my collecting obsession. Yes, he's a bust, but I have a connection to him and so he was the first player I actively collected in the 90s. My "white whale" was his 1992 Topps Gold auto, which I didn't obtain until 2009/2010 when I started getting back into collecting.

I'd load up on Brien Taylor RCs...think of the possibilities!
