I drifted away from collecting cards 5 or 6 years ago focusing on collecting autographs since I lived in St Louis. I've bought packs he tree and there and tried keeping an eye on stuff but not a lot of focus. Well I'm getting married next month and will have a 5 year old step son. He has taken a lot of interest in my live for sports and occasionally foes graphing with me. So I'm thinking collecting cards may be a fun hobby to get him started in. He is young but I'm thinking I started about the same age. Is it to early?

I'm looking for some input from some of you. I was thinking to start maybe basic sets like Topps or stuff like that. Kinda thought Heritage or something with cartoon/caricature look would interest him.

Any input suggestions would be great.

Topps Opening Day. Has fun inserts for kids (mascot cards, 3D cards), cheap investment, good assortment of current players. Let him handle the cards and enjoy them at that age, and don't worry about keeping them pristine or their future value. Good old stat backs are good for teaching him about the game too and how player's are compared to each other.

5 is not too young, I started collecting everything I could find Andre Dawson on when I was 7

I have a 5 year old who just got into collecting. He's been building an opening day set, which he loves. The base set is done easy but he's still working on the inserts ( between innings is 1:36). I think this is by far the best set to start with, for all the reasons above. What kid can resist mascot cards and 3D cards?

another set my son ( and his 2 y/o sister) like is the topps chipz set. These are retail only and actually poker chips, but they are durable, fun, and only a couple bucks for a pack of four.
