Long story short. Sold 4 boxes (not sealed) of 1989 UD low number. Buyer refusing to pay because the boxes were not sealed (Despite my description/picture being as clear as day). Were these boxes originally sealed? It appears most boxes appear the same as mine.

Thanks!

Yea, just did some digging and found this on BaseballCardPedia:

1989 Upper Deck, both packs and sets, were issued exclusive to Hobby outlets.

NOTE: Wax boxes were NOT sealed, while the two factory sets were. Collectors should be advised that, while the factory sets are sealed in shrink-wrap, the practice of watermarking shrink-wrap with the logo of the issuing company did not begin until the early-1990s.

None of the boxes from any of the major card companies in the 1980s were sealed.
You just had to trust the dealers back then, especially with the easily resealable wax packs from Topps, Donruss and Fleer.
Even '89 Upper Deck's foil packs could be resealed.
'88 Score packs couldn't be resealed, because the cheap cellophane tore when you opened the packs. But since the plastic was clear, people pack searched, much like with rack packs.

Most definitely not sealed. I sold through numerous cases of that product back in 1989-90.

Not completely true...

SOME cases of High numbers WERE sealed... I have owned 10-20 cases of these and they have always sold for a premium.. I think the outside if case is makers shrink wrap... BG

Regarding the above note about factory sets being sealed in shrink-wrap, I can state with absolute certainly that it is NOT universally true that they were shrink-wrapped. Many factory sets had only the small circular sticker that sealed the flap.

I thought some of the higher volume dealers at the time had their product shrink wrapped and sold at a premium so they sold them as unsearched. I carried a lot of 1989 UD and dont remember any wax boxes being sealed other than the case they came in. The seal was carton tape with the UD logo on it. They could have changed their packaging through out the print run as dealers might have demanded the product be sealed.

That is correct. It was a clear, circular sticker on the flap.

Here are the 4 boxes FWIW:

I simply sent him a response explaining how none of the boxes were factory sealed and any that were sealed were after market. I also provided him with the quote I found.

I just do not understand how someone can offer a fair amount if money ($78 delivered each) and not look at the picture/description...eBay can be so frustrating.

How much?

He offered $300 and I was asking for $12 shipping. Although I realized after the fact the boxes packaged up weigh closer to 12 lbs so I'd be looking at $24 shipping w. sig confirmation.

Regardless, it came out to $78/box shipped

Good stuff. You shouldn't have any issue moving those. We've done a group buy on multiple boxes of those here in the last couple months. I think we did a total of 4 or 5 boxes and they were $2.25 a pack plus s/h, if my memory serves me right.

What about shipping via USPS Proirity? I have shipped boxes and packed them in the Priority box so they get the most bang for the buck shipping wise..

Thanks for the suggestion, that is something I can look into as well. I usually do not ship larger items/boxes so not too well versed when shipping them. I figured Standard Post w DC + Sig Confirmation would come out to around $24 based on the USPS calculator. I'd need to get a large priority box to see how they would fit. Could potentially save a few bucks. I think the large boxes are $16 and change and the signature confirmation is another $2.70. I just had a box lying around that fit them well so I initially packed them into that box. Who knows, if this guy is adament about not paying they'll have to sit around until someone else is interested.

If I was able to do something similar to what MansGame suggested that would be sweet as well. Wouldn't mind sending out a plethora of smaller bubble mailers. Let's see what this guys decision is first.

If he does not respond by the weekend I'll probably just go ahead and file the NPB.

Buyer finally responded and said they will not be paying for the item and please cancel the transaction.

Just a quick Q. Is there any difference on my end between canceling the transaction or filing a NPB? As long as the confirm the cancellation I get my fees back, correct?

I am on the fence whether or not to file the NPB or just cancel.

Thanks BG...the boxes in question are low number.

If the buyer does a little research next time maybe they'll learn that some high number boxes were sealed.
