216? I thought I understood ERA but I guess I don't.

but to answer your question,

The Twins Happened.

Earned Runs X 9 / IP 8*9/.33 = 218

Everyone has a game like that in their career. It's an anomaly.

This may help you better understand.

(Because Bumgarner pitched recorded out)

27 (outs per game) * 8 (Runs given up per out) = 216 ERA (if he pitched all nine innings)

If he did not record an out his ERA would have been infinite.

I've never seen it calculated that way. Sine he only recorded 1 out isn't it 1/3 of an inning not ONE.

Ooops, I meant one out. So he pitched 1/27 of a game.

He gave up 8 runs in that 1/27 of the game, therefore his ERA is 8 * 27.

Finding ERA like this is only good when you have a nice even inning count, such as (one out), 2 innings, or six innings.

You can find ERA by doing.....

(9 / IP) * ER = ERA

I was at the game, most of them were ground balls...ground balls up the middle and down the line. Didn't look like a lot of solid contact, but it was crazy.
