Yankees sign Brett Gardner to 4/52m extension with 12.5m option for 5th year

Extension kicks in after this season where he is due to make 5.6m.

Nice to see the Yankees retain a homegrown talent prior to hitting free agency for a change.

Gardner's a good, tough player. But his game, both offensively and defensively, is built around speed.
It's risky for the Yankees to give a contract like that a to a speedy player who turns 31 this season.
But then again, the Yankees entire starting lineup is over 30 years old, except for 29-year-old Brian McCann.

Very good deal. I think he would've seen a deal around 15-17.5 million per year if FA next year. Tough to find a great fielder as well as a great leadoff hitter who isn't at the end of their prime.
