It flat out blows my mind how idiotic some professional athletes are.

[h=1]Yunel's eyeblack has a disappointing message.[/h]I have been conflicted about posting this picture since last night. I have a privileged seat near the Blue Jays dugout and allows me a close up of some pretty awesome moments. This one, however, is really disappointing. For those whose Spanish isn't fluent, have never seen Scarface or fail at google, Yunel's eyeblack "TU ERE MARICON" translates to "You're a XXXgot". There are some small Spanish locales where it translates to "*****" not "XXXgot" but that's a very small possibility.
I started asking myself why I wouldn't just post this image right away. It needs to be seen and it needs to be known that this is not okay. I was concerned that the players may be able to recognize that this was me who took this picture and would therefore rebuff the whistleblower but this is something Escobar wore on the field. He knew the possibility that a member of the Red Sox noticed it and commented on it, or even the umpiring crew. This is a bad word. It's a homophobic slur. It may have made a closeted Blue Jay/Red Sox very upset inside. There are a million insults he could have used that would have been funny, this was not one of them.
I was also worried that some Blue Jays fans would accuse me of "rocking the boat" when I should have just ignored it, but that's a problem with progress. When you hear or see something wrong, it's up to everyone to let people know that that's not right. "That's gay", "You're gay", "You're a ***", "You're a XXXgot" are not acceptable insults in 2012. They are slurs and we need to get rid of them. When our sports heroes proliferate their usage, our progress takes a step back.
How did it happen? Did Yunel write it? Did someone else write it and Yunel put it on anyway because he found it funny? Would he have ever gotten away with it if it was in English? Was Yunel's "flu" on Sunday the truth or disciplinarian action? There are Spanish speaking coaches who should have recognized and nixed this immediately as well.
I like Yunel a lot, he's the one who pays me the most notice when I'm at the games. He points to his fans, tips his cap and recognizes the support he is given. This was a mistake I hope he learns and he will never make again.

Maybe he ran out of eye black and was trying to write "tu ere mariconera" which would make more sense: You are a handbag.

keithlaw@keithlaw I confirmed with Getty Images that the photo of Escobar with the slur on his eyeblack is authentic.

What a bunch of cry babies on here. Holy crap. It was probably just a joke by a team mate.

I'm half hispanic and this wouldn't really be considered a big deal or all that offensive in hispanic culture.

The city that my wife comes from they call everyone marica, kind of like saying buddy or pal, a term of endearment. Everywhere else you go it means sissy or ***. Her city it is what friends call each other.

Don't worry, if and when we find out it's someone like Lawrie or Rasmus who wrote that as a prank, the guys offended will try and blow it off - then it will be an issue of people being too uptight.

It's really not that big a' deal.

People hold professional sport players to a way higher standard than a regular person..

I've seen worse at middle schools, honestly.

The player is hispanic. The teammate that wrote that on his eyeblacks is probably hispanic. What I'm trying to say is this joke wouldn't be considered a big deal and not really offensive in their culture. Us americans tend to blow everything out of proportion because every thing has to be so PC all the time just in case someone gets their feelings hurt. This is not the case in other countries where some of these players come from. They were probably joking around and just trying to have some fun.

Who wrote that piece? Could they have been more over-the-top dramatic about it? Boo hoo. Should he have done it? No? Is it THAT big a deal? No. "It may have made a closeted Blue Jay/Red Sox very upset inside". SERIOUSLY?! Why is she writing like her audience is a bunch of overly sensitive kindergarten girls?

It is still a slur. The only time my friends use it is in a negative way. True that in some places it is not a big deal but this didn't happen there.

Naw, it's just easier to single him out as a homophobe since he did it in front of 27,000 people. But I'd say it's a "bfd" when anyone uses terms like that, whether they're in middle school or Fenway Park.
