I know baseball fans and prospectors alike love home run hitters. What is your take on him, from a baseball value perspective and a card prospecting perspective? I will reserve my point of view for a while, so as just to introduce this discussion and not direct it with any bias to start.

As a Rangers fan, I hope he's awesome. 40+ homers two straight years in the minors is impressive.
But I fear he'll be a bust because of his astronomical strikeout numbers.

179 Ks in 439 at bats in 2014.
172 Ks in 411 at bats in 2013.

He also only hit .232 in half a season at AA, with a mind-boggling 115 Ks in only 250 at bats.
If he's whiffing that much in the minors, Major League pitchers are going to eat him alive.

The positive news is Gallo is only 21, so hopefully he developes a better eye. He walked much more in 2014 compared to 2013, so that's good news.

By the way, his Spring numbers so far:
.250 avg., 2 homers, 6 rbi, 8 Ks in 32 at bats.

played low "A" ball and was a 30 HR hitter here . Was mature for his age - I've watched local team for twenty years .

Hes very similar to Baez (although Baez doesn't have the same power). They both HAVE to figure out the contact issues. If they can't, whats the good of hitting home runs when you strike out 3 times a game.

Isn't that what Baseball is like in 2015 anyway?

Gallo has light tower power much like Harper and Stanton. He k's a ton but so do most of the modern day power hitters. If he can cut down his k's and better pitch selection he can be a star. If he dont he could be a better fielding Adam Dunn which aint so bad.

I like looking at career numbers as a reference.

Dunn:
.237/.364/.490 - 462 HR's and 28.6% K rate

Nah, I haven't prospected in several years. I only follow the Rangers' minor leaguers since it's my favorite team.

Texas signed Adrian Beltre through the end of 2016, so Gallo would have to move from third to play first or outfield if he gets called up this year or next. But he's only 21, so no rush.

As a Rangers fan, I hope he can turn out exactly like Adam Dunn. That would be great

15.8% BB rate, 28.6% K rate - Dunn

Gallo certainly has the power, but will he be able to get these type of rates at the next level?

He made adjustments from the previous season and was fantastic in High A last year. He struggled when promoted to AA, but he was young for the level and it takes most guys time to make adjustments after moving up. The hope has to be that he makes the same strides from last year to this year that he did between 2013 season and 2014 season.
