I recall a report that the grand prize winner sold the whole run for either $40 or $50K. Condition was not known but it must be assumed that it wasn't great, as that seems like a low price even for 24 years ago. Or else he just took the first offer.

The article BBC posted lists est value then at $125k. But still a lot of $ to turn a redemption into.

I absolutely do not believe that redemptions were case hits and/or inserted 1:1000 packs. Not only have I opened two sealed wax cases, I've opened a "grocery display box" that had several hundred packs in it, a 4x4x4 storage container filled tight with loose packs, easily 2-300 individual boxes boxes of varying pack/price size and have never seen a redemption or Sweepstakes/Instant Win cards with the 'X' and mailing address.

It's worth noting that to date, there is no known complete Sweepstakes Insert set out there. All of the major Topps master set builders that I know are missing between 3-10 cards for their sets.

Also, in my entire 1991 Topps pack ripping career I have pulled just one vintage card (1968 Topps Cardinals common in VG).

Do the major variations (Drabek, Hoiles, Whiten, etc.) ONLY come in certain packs?

When I got the Boyd and Drabek I opened both wax, cello and jumbo and I don't remember which it came from.

I've seen posts from people who opened a lot and perception seems to be a buy back hit every 3-5 cases. I'm sure if someone added up all the cards in the run you might get a rough odds. Like if there was an average of 500 cards times 40 years, that's 20,000. And if the print run of 100,000 cases I've seen is somewhat correct, that's 1:5 cases. The term "case hit" must be used loosely in that situation, especially when there wasn't anything else to hit.

Interesting thread here.

Using these numbers , 3.5 million per card times 792 cards = 2,772,000,000 total cards. Say an average of 20 cards per pack across the run that's 138,600,000 packs. If they really did 300000 Buybacks that's 1:462 packs...???

There were so many forms of packaging.

Wax
Cello
Raks
Jumbo
Vending
Cut
Factory

So the estimated 4 million of each card has to be divided into the above.

I just posted some math using 3.5 mil per card in packs w/ redemptions. Where did the 300,000 redemptions/Buybacks come from?

Bought a UV flashlight this morning. I will be going through my Dawson 1991 Topps cards later today during the Saints game.

Awesome thread!
But now I wish I didn't give away so many 5,000-count monster boxes of '87-'91 Topps. It would have been fun to dig through them for those rare variations.

That's awesome that the article is sh@t talking Topps even back then ;) But based on that and the calculations I did, I think it in the 1:500-1:1000 range. One per case seems reasonable. ***But that's with 300,000 Buybacks possible. Not sure if I believe it was that many

What were the results? Also, a recommendation: I suggest you label the light "1991 Topps UV Light" just so no one else uses it for anything else other than '91 Topps cards!

Are the UV back variations only for the main set? Or does it apply to the traded set as well.

Def some bright logo backs , good find. Again I need to read up on what fakes are there but it's hard to tell any differences to the stamp from the scan.

Ryan
I have a PSA graded one and a known fake and it, to me is still hard to tell. There is a definite difference but when compared to a group of cards it's hard to tell. It would be easier if there was a picture reference rather than reading what the fakes were.

Big 1991 Topps first for me!

I just opened a box of the $0.99 priced packs and it contained a mix of both the Bold 40th logo (A* and B* sheet) cards regular faint logo cards. So the entire sequence of A* and B* cards in each pack had some bold, some not. Mostly not. I've never seen anything like this prior.
