You know for that money you could pick up a really nice Shoeless Joe Cracker Jack. Just saying...

I love how super rare inserts get an even more premium if graded.

Makes me want to grade all my Belle 1/1s and rare '90s inserts for the hell of it and to help with resale value if hell freezes over ;)

Honestly though... $10k?!?! I'm still in shock. That's so much money.

Looking for Albert Belle cards! PM me!

10k is nothing to a rare basketball insert collector. Just last year there were Precious Metal Gems going for more than $25,000.

Haha we could start a LONG list of things you could get for that money... In cards along.

I'd start by saying you could get a SICK Babe Ruth auto and with money left over

I've seen that. That's insane lol

Who are these buyers? Seriously.

I question spending over $100 on a Belle. I can't fathom dropping $10k or $20k on a card. My wife would for sure diverse me. That's just insane.

Kids that were opening 93 Topps for Jeters are now 30 (climbing their prospective job ladder). All it takes is a couple young hot shot investment bankers to want to relive their New York childhood.

Just a guess.

Just a guess.

That's exactly what happened with all the stars from the 60's in the late eighties earlier 90's.

Lol I have one of these golden anniversary refractors of some no name Red Sox player. I'd be ecstatic to even get $30-$40 for it at this point :p

Here's a hall of fame rookie card story from long long ago in a far away place...

Jim Palmer.

So it is 1981 and it's a card show in Houston. Before the show opens a dealer friend wants to show my dad a trick he has figured out.
At this time you can easily obtain a Palmer rookie for about $2.
This dealer them proceeds to go around and buy every Jim Palmer rookie he can. When the show opens up he puts all the Palmer rookies in a showcase and makes a sign that reads: Jim Palmer Rookie Scarce Card! $15
So people walk in can't find any Palmer rookies. He ends up selling out.

I collected this set back in the early 2000s and was able to get about 40 of them before I gave up.

The best ones I had were Arod, Guerrero and Mike Lowell. The big name players are impossible to come by.

Most of the rarist cards don't get much of a premium for being graded. Grading usually has the biggest premium on sets that are condition sensitive and there have been many cards submitted with only a few grading gem. For the 1/1s and other rare, very limited cards, it really doesn't matter much unless the card is in really bad condition. Being a mint 9 really didn't have much to do with the price of the card, most of the 98 Bowman's would grade at the 9 level. If it were graded gem, I doubt it would've gone any higher...the sale price is really only based upon the 2 highest bidders, and you can even count the 3rd highest as well...without one of the 2 top bidders the card would've gone for $5k and without 2 of the top 3, it would've gone for just over $2k...

Grading of the rarist cards is usually something you do if it's your personal preference to secure the cards condition imo, if you think a very rare card will grade gem than it would give some extra value to the card, but not a huge increase. This is for the extremely rare limited cards. If you have a card say numbered to 30 or so and the set is condition sensitive and you get a gem mint and there is only 1 or 2 than that can have a big impact on the selling value of the card.

I will say that this is different for basketball cards. Grading is extremely important to basketball card collectors and plays a very important part in the value of nba cards. I do not notice much of a difference in football or baseball unless the set is known to have condition issues, but if a card is just impossible to locate, the grade, unless poor, usually won't do much to the value.

This was a hot topic in my store today!

On one hand, some said you could buy a high grade mantle rc or nice Ruth auto for that price.

Others said though while that price may seem huge, compared to the Bkb market, it's not, especially for the caliber player he is.

And honestly, if you collect Jeter, you could care less about what mantle Rc's or Ruth autos go for.

And on top of that, there's certainly no shortage of Ruth autos and there's over a hundred high grade mantle Rc's so basically, as long as you have the cash, you can always get one. But you cant say that about this Jeter card.

So outside of a gem sp rc, is this the most extensive Jeter card ever?

What would happen if the 1997 showcase one of one shows up now?

Anyway, this sale could pull up the values even more on other super rare (numbered or not) Jeter cards.

I'd also include the '98 Leaf Rookies & Stars Holofoil Longevity in that grouping.

Not shocked that this would approach the $10K mark at all.

I was thinking the same thing you mentioned in this post. This card is far more rare than a Mantle RC, even a high grade one. There are always Mantle RC's for sale, this card may never become available again.

As for the basketball madness, I wonder whats really driving the market. I know basketball is popular but in a sense, it's almost as if a few really rich people are willing to way over pay on everything. I don't think the market is all it seems to be. Something is up but what, I really don't know...

I'm probably more impressed by these sales:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Topps-...0867721698?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item51b1588de2 $172.50
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1998-Topps-...0867716637?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item51b1587a1d $218.49
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1996-Ultra-...1052316898?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item20d75f8ce2 (an easy to find insert, possibly a little condition sensitive but not overly so - maybe a $2-3 card ungraded) $307.02
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1996-UD-Dia...1052316861?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item20d75f8cbd (certainly a tough card but there's got to be a couple hundred of them out there - not incredibly condition sensitive) $4838.78
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1996-Pacifi...M-MINT-PWCC-/400565686815?hash=item5d4393521f $201.50
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1995-Signat...1052315928?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item20d75f8918 $541.00 (gotta be a record for a signature rookies card -- or at least an unsigned one)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-Choice...0867641393?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item51b1575431 $2024.99
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-Classi...GEM-MT-PWCC-/400565685336?hash=item5d43934c58 $456 (super easy insert and not incredibly condition sensitive)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-Fleer-...1052313312?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item20d75f7ee0 $909 (not a tough to find minor league issue and not that condition sensitive)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-Fleer-...0867640154?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item51b1574f5a $2019.50 (wow, probably not worth 10% of that)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-Fleer-...1052313168?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item20d75f7e50 $643 (these were somewhat condition sensitive since this set was 1 per pack out of Wal-Mart jumbos and was either the 1st or last card in the pack so many had dings out of the pack -- still a huge price)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-Classi...0847236019?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item51b01ff7b3 $1802.79 (again, not an overly tough card, card was top card on the team set so somewhat condition sensitive but with 9 PSA 10's out there and possible 100's more ungraded this is an overpay)
