I'm considering putting together the 1951 Bowman set. 1951 was the year my father was born, and I think it would be a terrific set to put together. However, it is a monster undertaking for someone on my budget.

I'm seeking some input as to whether I should do the whole set PSA graded, or just pick up the raw cards. Monetarily, the raw cards would be far less expensive than the PSA graded cards. However, I don't care about the grades, so there are a lot of low grade cards out there that are pretty cheap.

My wallet says go with the raw cards. My heart says that the project will take a long time anyways, so I may as well grab a handful of inexpensive PSA graded cards each month and build it up slowly over time. The vintage cards look so much better slabbed, IMO.

EDIT*

I currently have 90/324 (27.78%) of the complete set. Scans are below.

Re: 1951 Bowman Project --- Which Way To Go?

I'd go raw for the entire set. Way more budget friendly, and the set will look great in a binder. Much easier to store, as well.

Re: 1951 Bowman Project --- Which Way To Go?

Thanks for the input, TBP and Jay.

I do love PSA Graded cards, but I think I'll save those for the PC. Plus, as TBP knows all too well, I would never be satisfied with my graded set if I saw a higher-grade card out there ;) "Oh, I have Player X in a PSA 3, and there is a PSA 4 available? Don't mind if I do."

I like the idea of raw sets in binders and PC cards slabbed. Thanks, guys. I'll use this thread to update my 1951 Bowman collection as the cards come in.

I definitely agree with this. I'm going to save the big boys for last (obviously), and I'll make the decision re: PSA at that time.

I agree with base and lower value cards raw and higher dollar cards graded. I've got the Yankees from that year completed!

Thanks, Danny. I can't believe I didn't jump on a vintage set sooner. The older cards are awesome. My Duchscherer PC is drying up quickly, so once I finish a couple other PC projects, I am going to start devoting more time to vintage.

I had a pretty good time at the San Francisco TriStar show on Saturday. There were a lot of dealers set up with a nice variety of cards. However, I am very particular with my collections (as you know), so I didn't know what I would find that fits into those collections. I was impressed by the amount of vintage cards available. Baseball, basketball, football, boxing, etc. There were some awesome, old cards at the show. There was a ton of Giants and 49ers stuff. A ton. I don't collect either team, so that probably cut maybe a third of the tables off immediately. I was sorely disappointed at the lack of A's stuff available. So disappointed. The only card I saw (outside of a few Cespedes base cards priced at $30 a pop) was a sick Reggie Jackson Triple Threads 1/1 Auto Patch booklet. Beautiful card, but way out of my price range.

After touring the room a couple times, I started talking with a very nice dealer who had a large display of 1951 Bowman. We talked and negotiated for a minute, then settled on a price as a I thumbed through his cards. In the end, I picked up 54 cards. Most of the cards are in decent shape, too. Only a few were at the low-end of quality that I would accept. I am very pleased with the purchase. I'm thinking that card shows would be the best way to put the bulk of the 1951 Bowman set together. I just bring my list of what I'm looking for, and I can knock out a bunch of cards for a few dollars each. It's hard to find decent lots on eBay. I'm up to 78/324 of the set now (24.07%). Thanks for reading, and now for the pickups ...

It's been a couple months since I've updated this thread, but I received 12 more cards from my brother for my birthday back in May! Finally had time to scan them in. These cards put me at 90/324. Slow and steady. This set is beginning to look really good in my binder.
