This, from a Gooden collector via twitter last year,
"Here’s Dwight Gooden in an unfamiliar #64 jersey on his 1993 Bowman card. He briefly wore it in Spring Training that year hoping to recapture the magic from earlier in his career. Why #64? That was the number he was given in his first big league camp in 1984."
I pulled it from this link,
I can't say for sure if this is true, or if Gooden himself went on record saying this, but it is all I could find with a quick google search.
