Todays photo of the day features not athletes but unsung heroes of stadiums everywhere...the grounds crew.
This photo was taken a day before the NFL championship game held at Wrigley Field on December 29, 1963. This game pitted the Chicago Bears against the visiting New York Giants on what became a true field of frozen tundra. The game was played with a game time temperature of 9 degrees and it only got worse from there.
In this photo you see the grounds crew unloading field heaters in an attempt to warm up the field and help unfreeze the turf. This method didnt work all that well but as football normally does, the game went on anyway.
I hope you enjoy today's photo of the day.
