I have a series of mid 80s Padres newspaper cards, but they were all in an insert/supplement that presumably came with the newspaper. The Detroit Free Press Tigers cards were like that as well.

1978 Burlington Press:
Ah, sweet! While the Burlington Free Press archives aren't available online back that far I was able to find these on WorthPoint. The set was issued in pairs, covering the Expos, Red Sox and Yankees. No idea how complete this list is. Some of the cards have colored borders, which probably means they were in the Sunday paper, which is usually the only day newspapers printed in color.
Bucky Dent (Yankees) / Mickey Rivers (Yankees)
Cliff Johnson (Yankees) / Bob Bailey (Red Sox)
Luis Tiant (Red Sox) / Stan Bahnsen (Expos)
Ross Grimsley (Expos) / Rick Burleson (Red Sox)
Reggie Jackson (Yankees) / Chris Speier (Expos) - colored borders
Fred Lynn (Red Sox) / Andre Dawson (Expos)
Gary Carter (Expos) / Graig Nettles (Yankees) - colored borders
Carl Yastrzemski (Red Sox) / Warren Cromartie (Expos)
Carlton Fisk (Red Sox) / Tony Perez (Expos) - colored borders
Del Unser (Expos) / Bill Campbell (Red Sox)
Billy Martin MGR (Yankees) / Wayne Twitchell (Expos)
Jerry Remy (Red Sox) / Larry Parrish (Expos)
Bernie Carbo (Red Sox) / Pepe Frias (Expos) - colored borders
Dick Drago (Red Sox) / Jim Hunter (Yankees) - colored borders
Chris Chambliss (Yankees) / Jack Brohamer (Red Sox)
Ron Guidry (Yankees) / Lou Piniella (Yankees)
Roy White (Yankees) / Paul Blair (Yankees)
Ed Figueroa (Yankees) / Don Gullett (Yankees)
Bill Lee (Red Sox) / Steve Rogers (Expos)
Beckett lists 18 total cards, including Dave Cash, Wayne Garrett, Butch Hobson, Rudy May, Rodney Scott, Bob Montgomery, Ellis Valentine and Dick Williams. That leaves out the likely appearances of Jim Rice, Don Zimmer, Dwight Evans, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Torrez and Thurman Munson. That means there are likely at least 7 more pairs beyond what I actually found images for.
Ill have to check my copy on the Giants Mercury News. I'm thinking it was 1987 not 1988, unless there were 2 years???
Ryan
You're probably right, I don't have any images or references. Not even sure where I came up with that listing.
----------UPDATE----------
Ah, found them: October 16th, 1987, 25 "cards" all on one big page.
