Learned something new today...

I knew about the "flat foil" version of 1996 Topps Laser. Occasionally cards have been shown with just flat gold foil, and not the etched foil most cards had. I had always assumed this was just a missed step in the production process. But I was wrong.

The flat foil cards are actual dealer samples. And there are minor photo cropping differences between the base cards and the promos - at least on the Grace card. The promos are not stamped "promotional" or "sample" though. Obviously the gold foil differences are the easiest way to tell the promo versions. I'm interested if anyone else with the two versions notices photo cropping differences on their player.

Brad -

So only those with Gold Foil can be promos? Clark is in red , so maybe it doesn't apply? I quickly looked on COMC at the McGwire Red, there is one w slight front cropping, but the back is the same.

No Canseco.

Only Grace and Mike Stanley were issued as promos. Both have been documented (Donovan's guide, many E&V collector lists) for several years now.

Interesting. I don't think I'm familiar with "Donovan's Guide" - what's that?

Brad

Donovan is/was a collector on several of these boards who self-published an E&V guide in 2010 or so. He's the resident 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken collector/expert.

I know these promos at least used to be listed in one of the annual guides.

I am currently attempting updating my checklist, and trying to add all the cards that arent listed that members show off here...

Is there a Bronze 1996 Leaf Preferred Steel for Bagwell? Were the Bronze strictly Samples, or is there a non sample version as well?

Any help is appreciated.

Only sample , and have not seen a Bagwell , but it probably exists (at least one copy). No regular Bronze exists for anyone.

Thanks Ryan. I will leave it off for now until someone can prove it exists, if there is an actual Checklist that can verify.

Heres another. 1996 Select Certified Interleague Preview Bagwell/Clark. Is there a Sample of this one?

I want to tell you yes as I have seen scans from another collector but I would have to look at the list and pictures again.

I Googled under images "1996 select bagwell sample" and that image of a sample version shows right up. Bagwell shares that card with Clark so that's a tough one. O'neill is with Paul Wilson, a little less compition. I was looking for a condition upgrade a few years ago for mine and it took me a while to scrape one up. There has been one on the Bay that gets relisted for around $20 delivered for O'neill but I don't seem to see Bags offered.
