Can batters see the ball out of a pitcher's hand?

I saw an interview where a hitter (Palmeiro?) said he could see the seams but only about a vertical line in the middle of the ball and a circle on the side. I forget what pitches they indicate, but it made sense. But even then, he would only be able to pick that up halfway to the plate, by which time all sorts of other processes are in motion. What athletes do in instances like hitting a ball will take a lot of high-powered research to really understand.

Reading that article made me think how much more of an advantage the pitcher would have if the seams of the baseball were white instead of red. Imagine not being able to pick up the visual clues of spin? Batters would have it rough!

Neat. I also have read the physics of baseball book mentioned in the article. A must read IMO. Good stuff.
