Unless the Blue Jays also through in a lot of cash this would be monumentally stupid for the Cubs.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a worse contract than what the Jays will be paying Wells through 2014. $98.5 million in salary and the final installment of his signing bonus for another $8.5 million for a total of $107 million for a rapidly declining player. On top of that the contract jumps from $12.5 million to $23.5 million due in 2011 and then 3 straight years of $21 mill a year....and a no trade clause.

Wells' contract makes Barry Zito's look good

I know there is a lot of Wells bashing with Jays fans and he has not played up to expectations the last 3 years but I do believe with a change of scenery he will be better, maybe not 2006 better but 03 or 04 better. It's his contract that is soooo bad.

I don't follow the Jays so solid may have been an exageration.
I always thought he was solid but I guess that has changed?

2002--.275, 23, 100
2003--.317, 33, 117
2004-- 272, 23, 67
2005--.269, 28, 97
2006--.303, 32, 106
2007--.245, 16, 80
2008--.300, 20, 78
2009--.260, 15, 66

I guess it depends on what you call solid. He has been an average OF over the last three years but his contract has him as a top 5 player in the league

2008 is solid. I would like to see that RBI total up but not terrible. Last year stunk but I believe he was hurt? So he is not top 5 but still decent and change will do him good. It probably stinks playing in the AL East where you have no shot of winning ever.

Wells has some ridiculous home/away splits and one of the worst RISP avg.

An Ultimate Zone rating of -19.3 (worst CF in MLB) and a Wins Above Replacement of -0.3. That pretty much means that an average replacement CF would have done better than Wells. Wells' theoretical salary based on all the numbers is -$1.2 million (8th lowest in MLB). For reference Pujols has a theoretical salary of $37.4 million. <from fangraphs>

I do like Wells but his lack of intensity and brutal numbers (not to mention his salary) are just plain bad. If he remained a gold glove CFer it might offset his poor hitting but even that has gone downhill.

Don't the Cubs already have enough overpaid, under-acheiving OFs?

LOL! Yes they do!

And it makes me laugh.
So does the Yankees so what is your point there are about 5-6 other teams that have
over paid outfields, seems that is where teams spend the most money sometimes thinking this guys
will leadoff or at least bat some where 1-4 even 5. they never spend over spend on their infield
and they do over spend on there Pitching and even bullpen since you need pitching to keep you in the game.

the cubs wouldn't touch this deal, nobody was even willing to take Wells for free, he has a terrible contract, he is a horrible player (absolutely the meaning on anti-clutch), and gets booed daily in Toronto.

I don't think you guys understand how bad Wells is.
Here are some rankings, as of August 25th:

Out of 76 qualified players in AL:

64th in BA
74th in OBP
65th in SLG
70th in OPS

out of 158 qualified players in MLB:
135th in BA
147th in OBP
128th in SLG
142nd in OPS

Add in the fact he is lazy and his huge contract, it is just a terrible situation.
