never been a big fan of bgs, too much conflict of interest imho...they price, grade and consign cards. don't get me wrong, i pick them up when the price is right but for me, psa is a far more reputable company.

I was about to say the same sort of thing. However, I lump PSA in to the same kind of scheme. I buy the card, the slab is nice and the grade is a bonus. But my prefrence is PSA.

Really makes me think about sending in my Zim rookies now. I've never sent in before, now I'm not so sure.

I know each number correlates to a grade description, or whatever.
10 = Pristine
9.5 = Gem Mint
etc.

Don't the subgrades individually work the same way?

I mean, giving the card a 9.5 for edges, when they admit it has fraying on one side, still constitutes Gem Mint edges?
And having back corners with marks on them gets a Gem Mint corners grade?

They can average out the 4 individual numbers however they want after the fact, but each individual sub itself would be evaluated specifically, I would think.

It sounds like they decided they were going to give it a 9.5, then figured out the best way to distribute, and explain, the subs.

I don't think either are reputable companies. When you survive on repeat customer satisfaction, there is always a conflict of interest that exists when handling orders submitted by certain buyers. That goes for all grading companies, actually.

The worst thing to happen to PSA was BGS.... because as soon as there became TWO "reputable" places to get a card graded, then they had to start competing against each other for grades and customer retention. Obviously, if you're satisfied with the grades you're getting you're going to stay. If not..... you may start looking elsewhere.

PSA 10's and BGS 9.5's are "cheaper" to obtain now than they have ever been.

Even the autograph authentication on a lot of these places is suspect.

As long as BGS and PSA have the ability to turn a $50 card into a $200 card, then it's always going to be mutually beneficial to return better than deserved grades in order to keep the influx of orders from bulk submissions coming at a steady rate.

In other words, the ONLY reason to buy a slabbed card these days is for the excellent protection value and aesthetics if you're into that kind of deal.

I just wish we could go back to the days when a solid example drew a premium because the card looked nice, not that it would grade out as 9.5 or 10.

I had to say wow when I saw this story. I personally held it and I thought for sure no chance at 9.5 ... more like 8.5 the edge is rough real rough... its not 1979/80 opc with wire cuts so I dunno what BGS is thinking

SGC>BGS>PSA

The above is MY OPINION as a COLLECTOR

PSA would be better if their slabs werent so easy to switch out cards and offered better protection. way too flimsy

It's times like this I'm quite glad I don't own a single graded card in my collection.

BGS knows the hype going on with that card, as does the entire nation. So when it sells for a crazy amount and you hear the stories of how the buyer resold that card at X profit, who gets free advertising?
Badly Graded Superfractors, that's who!

The economy isn't what it was, obviously. Grading companies feel the heat for sure. So BGS is out there with a OVER graded card, basically telling people they can make a ton of cash selling BGS high graded cards.

I just hope it's not 1994 all over again. But due to the "Strasburg effect", there could be some money being poured into the card market again, and a crash in 2-3 years from now where people are selling slabs for the plastic, not the cardboard.

If you listen to the graders describe the card and didn't know the subgrades, it sounds like it got hammered to an 8 or something. I should be getting my sub back on Thursday, and I'm really curious to compare my grades to that Super--rough edges and surface dimples getting 9.5 subs . . .

No way that card is a 9.5

We all knew the card was not gem mint when it first sold. I can understand them doing their best to give the card a good grade, but this card deserves a 9 at best.
