In his 460th career game (he would play almost 2000 more in his career, ending up with 2440), Tony Gwynn strikes out in his first three at bats against Bob Welch of the Dodgers. It would be the only 3 strikeout game in his career. Gwynn gets a single in his next at bat, and reaches on an error in the bottom of the 10th inning, eventually scoring the tying run that sends it to the 11th inning. Future MLB manager Bruce Bochy ends the game with a walk off home run off Ed Van De Berg to lead off the bottom of the 11th.

Gwynn would total just 434 strikeouts in his career (Mark Reynolds struck out 427 times in 2 seasons), never striking out more than 40 times in a season. From 1991-1996 (six seasons), Gwynn would hit .350 and not strike out 20 times in any of the six seasons (105 total Ks in those 6 seasons). Perhaps most impressive is his career .429 average against Greg Maddux (39-91), against whom he NEVER struck out. He hit .462 against John Smoltz, but Smoltz did strike him out...once.
