Happy Birthday Johnny-O. A truly first class player and person. A few favorites from my collection: (sorry for the wonky scans).

In his honor, i present to you, The Rickey Henderson / John Olerud Story.

So Rickey upon joining Seattle late in his career, notices that teammate Olerud wears a helmet even in the field, and asks him, "Hey man, what's up with that".

Olerud says, "Well when i was in college, i had a brain aneurysm and the docs told me its best to wear it at all times."

Rickey says, "Say, i played in Toronto with a guy who did the same thing"

Olerud replies deadpan, "Yeah Rickey, that was me. We were teammates."

Rickey replies, "Yeah, that's right, nice to meet ya" and then wanders off.

Olerud, cousin of the legendary Dale Sveum. That's good enough to be royalty in my book :) happy birthday

I love this story! Unfortunately, it's not true, but I think it's worth telling anyhow!

RICKEY HELMET TALE JUST A JOKE
The Rickey Henderson-John Olerud helmet story is a good one, except for one little fact. It's not true.

When Henderson was released in the middle of May at Shea, some people in the Mets organization joked that when Henderson got to the Mariners, he would ask former teammate John Olerud why he wears the batting helmet. Olerud would explain that he always does and then Henderson would say that he had a teammate who wore the helmet last year. Olerud would respond, "That was me."

It was meant in harmless fun, but then ESPN reported it and Sports Illustrated in its latest edition followed with a story headlined, "Clueless in Seattle."

Several sources confirmed the origin of the story yesterday was in the Mets' clubhouse. Olerud has told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer it never happened.

The story is one many could believe because of Henderson's history of saying odd things. For example, last year Henderson couldn't remember GM Steve Phillips' name.

"It was all in fun, I imagine," said Pat Mahomes, who was Henderson's best friend on the Mets. "I think when it was started, the person who started it didn't think that it was going to be reported on. People already have their perception of Rickey. So it is definitely unfair to him, but what can you do about it?"

A Met player added, "It would be an unbelievable story, if it were true."

Wow, only 42...he always seemed like an old man even when he was a young star.

I remember reading an article in the early 90's that mentioned how Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar were considered "heart throbs" on the Blue Jays, whereas John Olerud was more likely to trigger some sort of maternal instinct in the ladies.
