Joey Votto gets 3 yr/$38 million extension

The Reds just gave Votto a 3 yr/$38 million extension (pending physical). Nice to see them get some sort of extension done. Wish it would have been longer though.

Personally I think this is a poor deal by the Reds. How did they not at least buy out one year of free agency?

I am sure they tried, but it would have made MUCH more sense to tac on another year at $14 million. What is the real benefit of only "extending" through the team control years? To make him happy? The only positive I see is that thay have an easier time forecasting their payroll over the next three years.

As a Cubs fan, I personally LOVE it

I don't get it. I was hoping for something in the 5-7 year range. Then they would have both Votto and Bruce locked up for a few years. Maybe they'll work something out for longer before this deal is over.

Good deal for Votto. The Reds paid him more than they had to, guarantee all the salary and didn't buy out a single year of free agency.

Well deserved but sadly after those 3 years we'll probably be seeing Votto in pinstripes.. I agree they should have locked him up long term
